Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@CrimsonZephyr TBH, I really dislike the idea of "philosopher kings". It assumes that an oligarchy is OK, as long as you have the right oligarchs, ignoring their potential to be corrupted.

One does not shake the box containing the sticky notes of doom!If we're working on rules to survive by...
- Rule 1: This is not normal.
- Rule 2:
Believe the autocrat.Take threats from the autocrat seriously. - Rule 3: Donald lies. Watch what he says but believe what he does.
- Rule 4: Donald tells people what they want to hear depending on whom he's talking to.

@Mad Skills: Oh dear, a chunk of my irony meter appears to have flown off and lodged itself in my forehead.
@Henry: Well, to be fair, almost any system works if you have the right people. The problem is, said right people have to die or retire eventually and there's no guarantee their replacements will be so competent.
This is the one place where I welcome fickleness on Trump's part.
Reading that article, I don't think he's changing his mind about climate change. I think he's looking to see if he can make any profit from. He'll take the position that'll financially benefit him.
This bit:
Perhaps it's just the way the journalist words it, but I'm not convinced he even cares whether or not man-made climate change exists. It sounds like he's only interested in what profit or loss is attached to climate change from a business perspective.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.
