The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If The Trains Run on Time, maybe that'll include some action on climate change? One can find the silver lining anywhere, n'cest pas? The problem is that Trump, as a businessman, is grossly incompetent when it comes to making things work properly.

On a large scale, yes. The climate change denialism is a danger to the very fabric of human civilization, fascist or otherwise.

Why the Chelsea hate?
It's more of Clinton distrust.

I'd rather not have her climbing up the system and then we get straight back to the Clinton Machine, so to speak, turning into a gigantic parasitic tick that slurps up all money for the party from desperately needed Local/State/Congressional races for the Democratic Party, and stuffs it into eternal Presidential Campaign funds. (This is what nuked a lot of Downticket Races besides Hillary's name being Mud, the DNC was diverting money the rest of the party needed into Hillary's coffers)

That and I want the Neo Liberal wing of the party to go away, and understand the words "Please Sit Outside".

That and Americans HATE Political Dynasties.

Re: Godwin's Law: Technically, the law only states that the odds of something being compared to Adolf Hitler or Nazis approach 100% as a discussion goes on. It doesn't actually say that the person who makes the comparison is wrong, that is simply implied due to that fact that, under normal circumstances, very few things can be compared to Hitler without gross exaggeration.

However, in what I predict will be the Arc Words of the next four ro eight years, this is not normal.

So it's essentially more like Crying Wolf in that overuse of Nazi comparisons dilutes the impact of the statement for cases where it actually applies.

TBH, I know very little about Chelsea besides her campaigning for her family and following them down the lawyer path. I suspect that's the case for most right now.

@Elle: Consider that Chelsey has repeatedly stated she wants bugger all to do with politics (and, she may well be telling the truth: it's not beyond the realms of the possible that she has done what my dad did to the family trade of being bakers — said "screw that and your 4 am preps!"). tongue It is acceptable for kids to decide not to be their mums or dads. None of Maggie Thatcher's kids have hit the politics with anything like malice aforethough. Even though it was widely theoried for years both twins would (when only Mark made muffled noises, but never followed through).

Consider also that Donald has brought an actively meddling gaggle of family to the party.

I think the scary dynastic thing is already under your collective noses. And, it isn't the Democrats predominantly doing it. <_<

@Fighteer: Ah, but the trains never run on time. Fascist, but Inefficient is far and away the norm for totalitarian regimes.

@Alley Oop: More or less, though I think it's worth noting that both sides have diluted the meaning of this particular comparison. Furthermore, I think the meme of Godwin's Law has further damaged the comparison, as it (and the implied wrongness of the party "Godwinning") gave everyone a convenient tool for shouting down the comparison even where applicable.

@M84, I would think that immigrants/the undocumented would be first if that were to happen. And then it would spiral downwards.

There's also the fact that humans have a really strong capacity for denial and mental gymnastics. I'd liken it to a defense mechanism to avoid discomfort.

Nobody WANTS to believe that Trump may be heading the US towards fascism. Ergo, they have an emotional investment in downplaying any possibilities that this might be the case. The heavy distrust of media establishments only serves to reinforce this, as people cynically remark that media outlets are probably just playing up the comparisons for views.

Yep, until the orangeshirts come bashing their doors down, most people will bury their heads in the sand and say It Can't Happen Here. They'll focus on the ways history isn't exactly repeating and ignore all the rhymes with the past because it's so much more comfortable to pretend that everything is still normal.

But, as we've established, nothing about this is normal.

Speaking of "broken," North Carolina's Governor McCrory is trying to get the legislature to invalidate the election and declare him the winner - using a law that is not subject to any kind of court review.

If that doesn't immediately and automatically validate an armed rebellion, I don't know what does.

I believe it was posted in this thread not very long ago that intellectuals in 1930's Europe saw many of the same signs that we're seeing now but people didn't want to believe them either.
