Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's easier to do if they don't have much in the way of education, if you're running on the party line that they'd be more inclined to vote for anyway, and well...if you're good at it.
Being a snake oil salesman is something Trump is VERY good at. He's such a good showman people don't notice the trail of slime he leaves behind.

I'm not saying it's favorable; just that it's a possibility. That wouldn't be my first choice either, but the fact is that the man's got one of the lowest approval ratings in Presidential history. I'm not advocating it by any means, but it's still something that you can't really rule out.
@Silas W: Thanks, really. That's what I needed to hear. Although the fact that there's even a 1% chance it could happen still gives me a touch of the willies...

See, he may be a rich man . . . but unlike Romney, he's an honest rich man who speaks his mind and tells it like it is.

It probably has a lot to do with the "Rags to Riches" trope. It's easier for people to identify with a rich snob, if they think they can someday become a rich snob themselves (They can't.)

One does not shake the box containing the sticky notes of doom!Just a reminder that Bannon is not in the Cabinet, he's an advisor.
For future reference, if someone's title does not include the word "Secretary" and isn't "Attorney General", then they aren't part of the Cabinet, and unless I'm sorely mistaken, are not subject to Congressional approval.

Oh God! Natural light!https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House_Chief_of_Staff
Basically a secretary and gatekeeper with authority to order people around the White House, exact details vary by administrations.
One of the bullets listed in that job description is "controlling the flow of information". If that means Donald will be depending on Bannon for news, well...
Edit:
Whoops. Preibus is the Cheif of Staff.

So, no official authority, but he's the president's right-hand man? That position sounds ripe for a potential Dragon-in-Chief.

One does not shake the box containing the sticky notes of doom! Also Bannon isn't Chief of Staff... That's Reince Priebus. Steve Bannon is officially Counselor to the President.

Wizard Needs Food BadlyNear as I can tell from this
, Chief of Staff and Chief Strategist are essentially the public and private faces of the same coin.
Edit to add: Bannon might have trouble getting the security clearance needed to take the position. He has a domestic violence charge on his record.
among other red flags. Donald could override the vetting process but not without backlash.

Also, as to Trump and Nukes:
Keep in mind besides his own Ego, Trump is driven by Greed. He can't well grift and run off with fat bags of cash if the world's nuked.
Trump's Presidency is likely going to be grifting, petty revenge and Steve Bannon-ism.

That's good. That might mean he doesn't get the job and influence the flip-flopping Trump from behind the scenes.
Hell, Trump might get an adviser who isn't a terrible Racist and Propagandist.
... What?

Oh, I think it's pretty simple: Bannon wants to bring the Soviet Union back from the grave.

Let's not present assassination as a favourable option, please.
