Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

They're already doing that.
Divide and Conquer.
No you'll make stuff up, it's hypotheticals when you have evidence that something is in some way feasible. You're just creating fiction.
There is no indication that Trump could survive a drop in approval rating, no indication that any state government would attempt to break away, no indication that the military would face desertions, no indications that the hypothetical breakaway nations would want or get international support, no indication that Russia would be able to ensure the survival of said states.
Fun fact, just making random things up isn't actual analysis of hypotheticals.
Depends on when, it it happens after 2016 and we have a Dem House and a Republican Senate I could see it happening. Likewise if the Republicans feel Trump is a liability and Pence would be a better candidate, they might even try and avoid a rerun of the Nixon situation and not have Pence pardon Trump, which could lead to an angry Trump lashing out at the Republicans with every dirty secret he's learned about them.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI'm pretty sure their "Fun Hypothetical" was just the plot of the Star Wars prequels.
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"I'm not seeing it, Silas.
Republicans won't touch him unless something nukes his approval rating among Republican Voters. While Trump's entering at nationally low levels of high 30/low 40 percentage, he's at like 80~ approval inside his own party.
And Republicans are likely to circle the wagon tighter if anything does come out of it. Impeachment is unlikely unless you can find something worse than Serial Rapist to attach to him, which I'm not sure you're going to get. We literally just had a president elected who has admitted to Sexually Assaulting women.
I remain faithless in Republicans drumming up charges when this is their moment in the Sun, possibly one of the last few election cycles they can naturally win without full blown jackboot voter suppression.
Or the Democrats taking back the House.

Sure it's a tough line to cross but it's possible, remember the sexual assault thing was him being caught confessing, something like Trump actually being caught on camera committing sexual assault in the White House might do it. Yes he'd have to go so crazy that he'd destroy his reputation not just with independs but with his own base but I could see that happening, I'm not sure if even the Republican establishment could stomach actual death camps for Mexicans, that do Trump actually tries to nuke somebody/orders the military to specifically target civilians.
Sure but I fail to see how that would mean Trump would be willing to leave, he isn't exactly know as a team player.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI don't think that even that will happen. They'd need some support among the Democrats for impeachment to work and given that Pence is a Meet the New Boss person they won't. It'd also be an incredibly reckless thing to do if their voters end up not liking that move.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI think the most ideal situation is that the EC overrides the vote. Clinton and Kaine get to be president for four years, the EC likely will get abolished for their "horrific betrayal", and after that Democrats have a much easier time winning future elections, because hey, popular votes favor Democrats.
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youThe EC probably won't vote FOR HRC, just against Trump. And even then, it would just go to the mostly GOP House of Reps. The House would likely pick Trump anyway just to avoid pissing off his supporters.
However, this would still help delegitimize Trump's so called "mandate".
Sadly, this is almost certainly not going to happen. But it's worth a shot.

Actually, you would need exactly 37.
The EC pushing the election to Clinton would just get us Ryan as president, does anyone honestly think that in the event on the EC going against the state laws to give Clinton the win the Republicans wouldn't immediately impeach her and Kaine so as to make Ryan president?
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSpecifically, they need a simple majority in the House (which they currently have) AND a 2/3 supermajority in the Senate (which they do NOT have) to successfully impeach. And impeachment is merely the trial. Impeachment does not imply removal.
Failing that, I'd take Ryan before PENCE

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youThey'd have a pretty solid argument, electoral fraud and conspiracy to defraud the public in an election.
A Clinton presidency build on illegal activity (which is what one built on faithless electors would be) would have no legitimacy and I could honestly see a number of Dems flipping to support impeachment simply because the alternative is having electors actually start picking the president, which undermines the very foundations of American democracy.
I'll stick to hoping that a bunch of lost Clinton ballots turn up in Florida and somehow swing the state for her.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI'll stick to "We're getting Trump, it's going to suck and the end of the 'American Century' has come, and with it the hegemony of America as the #1 Super Power. Get used to China and Russia having more political influence. Get used to graft and sleaze and corruption. Get used to voter suppression. Get used to quieted journalism. Get used to long ugly legal battles. Get used to the fact we're going to have to fight for any rights through a likely permanently conservative Supreme Court."
Also
"There's likely not going to be an impeachment. Ryan is going to stick around as a very successful and loud and Very Seriously Respected Speaker of the House, and the sagebeard Sunday Talk Show and Beltway position is going to be privatizing national healthcare and welfare."

The Electoral College will never make HRC president. Their contact information is available, and Trump voters would probably murder them and their families.
Honestly, the only way forward is for the country to suffer for a few years with the Republican yoke around its neck. Maybe Trump's allure with these people will vanish. Maybe his mismanagement will get enough of them killed to start swinging elections blue. Maybe the Democrats are on their way to a resurgence, or maybe they've been dealt a mortal blow. In any case, Trump will be in the White House and the country will be in for one hell of a bloodletting.

Eehhhh, not really? The potential for faithless electors are the whole reason we even have an electoral college, to prevent "the uneducated plebs" from voting in a known tyrant.
In any case, for a fraud trial to go through, there has to be some evidence that there actually was fraud committed. Clinton has conceded defeat graciously. And as far as we know, made no efforts to change the outcome.
Trump voters that might enact violence are largely cowards. They might opportunistically attack someone if they meet them on the street and outnumber them, but they won't seek them out.
Give what up, exactly? Low standards is exactly how "President Trump" became a thing in the first place

Give it up, man. It's not going to happen. Getting your hopes up will just set you up for disappointment. Set your expectations lower, it's better for your health.
The EC won't make HRC president, even if they don't give 270 votes to Trump. That would just leave the decision up to the House, who would almost certainly pick Trump anyway.
But this might at least lead to the EC finally being removed. And further damage Trump's "mandate" (and ego with it).
Disgusted, but not surprised

Which Paul Ryan has shown no signs of giving a shit about other than reenacting Atlas Shrugged.
