Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So Pence is inspiring a slew of new musicals...
You better not hold your breath on that, especially if the Democrats manage to block most of Trump's economic policy.
In fact some of Trumps policies might even have an expansionary effect on the Economy.
On the other hand it may not be necessary to hope for that. Paul Ryan has signaled that not only does he want to do away with the ACA, but he's also looking to put Medicare on the chopping block. While the ACA doesn't have the most solid support Medicare is still a fairly popular program. It may just be the opening that the Democrats need to counterattack the GOP, especially since Trump said he wasn't going to cut Medicare.
Also it's an undercurrent of fighting the last war, against FDR and Lyndon B. Johnson, for expanding Government. Government Healthcare is Socialist and Communist.
It all ties back to dumb ideological reasons among the Republican elite, one way or another. Whether it be "Private Market Good", "Government Needs to be Small", "Communism is Bad", "Ayn Rand was Right", etc.
Medicare actually helps people. The Republicans cannot let that continue.

Wizard Needs Food BadlyI've always suspected an undercurrent of sadism goes along with those small government positions. The GOP is well past Hanlon's Razor.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I'm going to assume no one here has any actual facts and figures to back up their feelz. Seems to be standard for the anti-drone crowd.
Some good news amid the shitstorm: Republican senator and Vietnam POW McCain promises to push back against torture proposals
.

I mean, it would be ridiculous if he didn't all things considered. But whether he's actually got enough sway on the matter is another question.
I mean, he was known for being brutally tortured by the Vietcong and it's affected his life ever since. He would be one of the first in Congress to speak out on such things. I would be truly shocked if at any point he decided to fall in line on this issue without raising any protest.

Mc Cain is reliable to have a conscience when it comes to this sort of thing. He and Sanders did good things for vets.
@Anti-drone crowd? Who the hell are you calling anti-drone? Drones are made of awesome! It's how they're used that's the problem!

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Apparently Mike Pence went to Hamilton in Broadway recently, and the lead actor had an unscripted plea for him regarding Trump:
And now it's gaining vitriol from Trump himself. Demanding an apology.

The ridiculous thing is it's as gentle as it could've been, and not even made as a criticism but a request. I'm worried that Trump may legit abuse lawsuits as a soft means of censorship at this rate.
I don't think the part about diplomatic bribes has been made yet.

That's also another bad sign, of course. Demanding an apology for what was a pretty polite request, that's the beginning. Soon enough it won't be a demand for an apology, it'll be an arrest for treason against the state.
So Trump is trying to make foreign diplomats stay at his hotels so they could garner favor with him.
This is pretty much all the Republicans need to impeach him later if they want once he proves too unstable.
I'm hoping he's stupid enough to try to sue McCain and Paul Ryan for speaking out against him, because the ensuing bloodbath would be kinda hilarious in a Black Comedy way.
History has its eyes on you. Every act you do, on that level, sets a precedent. And each of your actions ripple across the globe.
The weight of responsibility that lies on US politicians is back-breaking, yet they get lost as tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day. It's a damned tragedy is what it is.

Let's hope the economy tanks enough due to his stupidity that the voters will get rid of him. I'd rather that than an illusory bubble of wealth.
Also no idea about how to go about doing it but it's probably never too late to start trying to reach out to the rural voters with info of this. Something to try to do however challenging it might be. Democratic Party-led Internet initiatives to provide easy wifi to rural communities and things like that. Good chance to win them over, succoring them like this.
