Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He has advocated a trade war with China in the past. Whether or not he'll actually follow through, and whether or not that leads to a cold war...
There is the fact that he supposedly owes over half a million dollars to the Bank of China.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI'm a straight white Catholic man and Pence terrifies me. He should rightfully terrify anyone who believes in equity and justice. Not to mention that a lot of people forget that Catholics and Mormons were both at one point targets of WAS Ps as well, so if this country really starts regressing we might end up in the crosshairs again.

"Can't make an omelette without breaking some children." -BurSo, @Hodor2, Sanders just showed up unannounced
at a protest in front of the white house to deliver a speech opposing the keystone pipeline on the grounds of it infringing upon the rights of Native Americans in the region its being built through.

Pence concerns me too, but not in a "Oh, Crap! I might end up sent to a gay conversion camp!" way. Though I guess I might end up in a Bible study camp due to my atheism.

Disgusted, but not surprisedYeah, Sikh temples keep getting attacked when anti-Muslim sentiment flares up.
Which is really stupid when you know anything about Sikhism. Every Sikh is taught to defend themselves, but only in self-defence. So, attacking them is a really stupid idea.
There's also something about every Sikh carrying a knife on them almost all the time.
Okay, this is somewhat juvenile of me, but fuck it, I laughed
.
"Hillary's an old woman, she doesn't know how to start movements. Me, I have the best movements, I make the greatest movements you'll ever see. You'll see so many great movements from me that eventually everyone's going to have some really big league movements. Believe me."
Oh God! Natural light!Pence can waste political capital on trying to passively aggressively eliminate gay people all he wants, public acceptance of homosexuality has been going up and religious fundamentalism has been going down, and those trends aren't likely to change. Muslims have a lot more to worry about, since we're (for some reason?) still blaming them for 9/11.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed."Sanders just showed up unannounced at a protest in front of the white white"
On that topic though, it's certain good that he's involved with that and I really hope Obama doesn't allow the pipeline to go through. I would say though that I'm not particularly surprised. Sanders does seem to care about/prioritize minority rights in situations where it involves a broader economic issue.
I'm sorry if this comes off as insensitive but "gay conversion camp" is starting to sound to me like "Obama's gonna confiscate all the guns" to me.
Support for conversion therapy was a thing on the GOP platform but no one has exactly been talking about a plan to implement anything of the sort, all the attention seemingly going toward bigger, badder bathroom bills, pushback against marriage and general discrimination.
"Curing them gays" was something of an obsession of Pence's as a Congressman, and he's one of the most anti-LGBTQ state politicians ever elected in the modern era. It's not unreasonable to expect something horrifying from someone like him.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."@Ambar: Yeah, when I say Pence is more predictable, that's what I mean. Granted, the chances of Trump actually blowing up the planet aren't that high, but when it comes to the possibility of the end of civilization, you can't really afford to take any risks, regardless of how small they are.

Anyway, on the note of Japanese relations/Japanese-Americans - there's a reason a lot of the people in that video linked a few days ago were talking about reexamining Article 9 (the disarmament clause). Trump's anti-globalism may mean troop withdrawals from Japan and a straining of our relationships with allies there, which may invigorate Japan's conservative and war-hawky right wing.
It's been fun.Dwayne Johnson may or may not run for president in 2020.
I don't know if I like this trend. First Kanye, then Perlman, now him. I do not want to see American politics turn into even more of a celebrity circus than they already are.
But on the other hand, what the hell - if a qualified and good-hearted celebrity came along, then it could be just what we need. The P*ssy-Grabber-In-Chief is a showman - fight fire with fire.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."

We'll add that to the mile-long list of things we can only hope Trump will or won't do.
