The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If enough voter suppression measures get passed, enough Democrat-leaning demographics are gutted, enough districts are gerrymandered, they won't have to run.

Even seeing all the precedents, even feeling sick already from all the white supremacists, climate change deniers, and other hatemongers in the cabinet and FADA and everything else, suggesting that there may not be an election in 2020 feels like an overreaction. But I don't know anymore if it is, and I know that holding out hope that it is just panic will be the exact attitude that makes sure that that panic is justified.

It's been fun.

I don't say this kind of thing often, but bless California. I hope they speak up loud and never quiet down.

It's been fun.

As noble as the sentiment is, it's hard for me to take much solace in individual states or cities speaking out. Their power is miniscule compared to the entire GOP-controlled government.

Like, New York may pledge now to be a bastion of safety for immigrants and whatnot, but wait until the GOP cuts their federal funding in retaliation or something similar. We'll see how quick they all start Heiling the Fuhrer then.

Speaking of thinking "it can't happen here", I'm feeling like I should get the book of the same name. I hear it's disturbingly applicable to current events.

The South African national party gerrymandered their way into a 45-year lock on power. The screwing might just be for the rest of my working life (of course, there will be no retirement for the plebes in Trumpworld).

Strange times when I find myself arm in arm with Sacramento and San Francisco.

California has long been a net contributor to Washington’s coffers, receiving an estimated 78¢ in federal spending in return for every dollar it sends, according to a study by the Washington-based Tax Foundation, a nonprofit think tank that provides analysis of federal and state tax policies. That gives state leaders potential leverage when it comes to complying with policies it doesn’t like, starting with the deportation of undocumented immigrants.

You need us more than we need you, Trump. Suck on that.

Note that I still in no way endorse or support any idea of California leaving the Union. This is our country and we'll take it back no matter what anyone says.

There will be in election in 2020, and if the Democrats win, it will probably be accepted.

What I worry about is whether that election will be winnable, and whether won't get worse with time.

[up][up][up][up][up] If Trump starts deporting people he will do more damage to California's economy than him cutting off funding to places. California's central valley farming economy will literally be gone.

Hang in there, Cap. If we have to take the streets to keep the people we love safe, we will. If the calls and emails don't work, if the best we can do is to stand up and say that we won't let them hurt people, then that's what we'll do.

It's been fun.

My only consolation in these dark times is that as of right now, we don't live in 1984 where governments can stamp on a human face forever. All regimes end, at some point. I don't expect Putin's Russia or the CPC in China to last forever, either.

...I get depressed when I think about the fact we won't see them break in our lifetimes, most likely.

A few days back, someone was saying that California was arbitrarily shaped as it is for no good reason. This is why. California's numbers, resources and and potential resources at the time gave it a lot more leverage in how it entered the Union back in the 1800's. Even now the state gives more than it takes from the rest of the Union, meaning it gets more of a say in what it can do with regards to the federal government.

It is good to see that all the effort the Republicans tool to derail Obama micht come back to bite them in the form of a precedent. Although that'll give Trump a possible justification to his angry white voters as to why his promises are not met.

You may think that your stopping short of calling them fullblown racists is an extreme concession on your part that somehow sets you aside from the attitude Stewart is condemning, but all other people see is a Principles Zealot.

Congratulations on misusing the Principles Zealot trope. "Racists can screw off" is hardly a zealous position. Besides, the reality is that, despite your constant handwringing about how "the Democrats can't win without reaching out to these people" there isn't a single person in this thread who has advocated against reaching out to them. We're just not going to tolerate pretending that they're not bigoted within the confines of this conversation.

That is if the elections arnt fixed from here on out.

@Draghinazzo: What depresses me even more is another fact - the entire human race's clock may very well be ticking down. Climate change is coming upon us fast, and we're sticking our heads in the sand rather than dealing with it. Don't forget the threat of nuclear annihilation, super viruses, rogue A.I.s, World War 3...

All regimes end eventually, but the question on my mind is - which will end first, these regimes or humanity?

@Zarastro: I fear you're right that Democratic obstruction, as necessary as it is, will just give Trump and his cronies a convenient scapegoat that they can pull out when it comes time for re-election. "We totally could have made good on all our promises if it wasn't for those darned Democrats!"

Not to mention, an unforeseen consequence of Obama spending eight years working around the GOP is that it's given the GOP an eight-year-long playbook on how to work around an uncooperative government. They can learn from the master and follow Obama's example in the sickest way possible.
