The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

How do people feel about starting an American protest thread? This thread is more about politics and policies in general, and moves so fast I think a subtopic like that would just get buried.

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.

If Clinton had been the one elected, this whole hiring process would be a lot smoother. Even with the impending impeachment attempts from the House.

The only controversy I would see happening would be whether or not Huma Abedin would be in a high position. And that probably would blow over quickly.

Heck, even if by some miracle the EC made her POTUS (not gonna happen I know) and she only had a week or two to restaff the WH and her Cabinet, she'd probably find a way to manage.

If Hillary had been elected that would have been an enormous victory against the strongman regimes popping up all over the world, and we wouldn't be suffering an existential crisis. We probably wouldn't be worrying about the US shredding the planet via climate change.

Donald Trump plans 'victory tour'.

Humility, thy name is Donald.

Of course. The rallies are like the main reason he campaigned in the first place. It's all about his own ego.

Skewed Priorities, thy name is Trump. He should be focusing on staffing the WH, filling the Cabinet, and getting ready to do the damn job.

This all but confirms that Pence/his family/inner circle/the congressional GOP will be the ones really running the show.

I guess that means we don't have to fear any unpredictable military escalations at least.

Attempts are being made to launch an #AuditTheVote campaign, demanding that the election results be analyzed for any sign of Russian tampering.

[up]Probably a good thing to check for, in any case.

Also, about Romney playing up more mainstream conservative positions for political expediency: in 1994 he said he believed abortion should be legal in the country, and he said the same in 2002. It's completely plausible that he changed his mind but even now he says he finds it understandable in the cases of rape, incest, and when the mother's life is at stake. He's done shitty things like promising to nominate judges to overturn Roe vs Wade but it still shows that he views things with a degree of nuance that a lot of Republicans in the last several years don't.
What's utterly amazing (not in a good way) about hardline Republicans, is that there are only about five countries on the planet (plus some micro-states), that outlaw abortion in all cases. Most countries at least make exceptions in cases where the mother's life is at risk. They're so out of touch it's baffling.

Oh and related to what I was saying a few pages ago; I was at a David Suzuki talk today and he pointed out that one major difference between Canada and the US is that here in Canada much more of us of us know that evolution is real. So hey, at least we've got that going for us!

[up][up]Just a thing, most of the time those exception never materialize as doctor dosent like to preform abortions, ether by fear of losing one jobs or because conservative worldviews

[up]Ok, im an ignorant here, how much is that?

An absolutely astronomical margin.

I don't know about astronomical. It's too large to be chance but you're talking roughly one percent of the national numbers.

It's roughly 1.16 million at this point according to most estimates.

Apparently her margin is now bigger than the winning margins for John Kennedy and Richard Nixon.

Wall along the US-Mexican border aside, how much will it cost to set up resettlement camps for minorities and conversion camps for gays anyways?

Conversion camps already exist in almost every state, they just aren't talked about a lot. They also have used mental hospitals for conversion therapy in the past.

sigh

I swear it flip flops every day where I go for being cautiously optimistic despite my cynicism of the Dems finally getting their shit together to other days at the stunning realization that a guy who was a reality tv star and open racist and fascist is going to be in control of the most powerful military in the history of mankind.

My hope is that the strong culture of relative political stability in the US will hold and prevent Trump from turning the US into an illiberal democracy. The floodgates have been opened, but you guys still have a chance to come back in a way that I don't think other countries have because of how long you've lasted up until this point.

Then, once Trump leaves, depending on how well or how badly he does in office, it will send a powerful statement about the strongman regimes developing worldwide. If he gets outed and the US begins undoing the damage done, it weakens and demoralizes the populism plaguing the west by default. I don't expect them to be magically undone shortly after Trump's run, but I hope it would expedite the process.

I don't know about France but I sincerely hope that it doesn't fall, and that as many countries as possible continue to dodge Trumpism. No regime in human history can last indefinitely, but I hope this particular wave dies out sooner rather than later and that it isn't replaced by something even worse.
