The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

but going by what they say about him you'd think he's literally a less orange Trump.
A less orange and BIGOTED Trump. Romney's pretty much the closest thing to Arnold Vinick that exists in real life, I'm pretty sure.

For the good of the country I'd hope Romney took the position, but I wouldn't hold it against him in the slightest if he told Trump to suck a cactus instead.

Sessions on the other hand is Bannon without any of his social media savviness. Has a penchant for refusing to investigate even high profile crimes like church burning when black citizens of his state are the victims.

Also, about Romney playing up more mainstream conservative positions for political expediency: in 1994 he said he believed abortion should be legal in the country, and he said the same in 2002.

It's completely plausible that he changed his mind but even now he says he finds it understandable in the cases of rape, incest, and when the mother's life is at stake.

He's done shitty things like promising to nominate judges to overturn Roe vs Wade but it still shows that he views things with a degree of nuance that a lot of Republicans in the last several years don't.

He seems like the kind of guy who actually cares about policies, implementation, and the nitty-gritty of such. Kind of like Obama in that regard. I think he would've made a decent president even if I don't agree with a lot of his views. At least he's got way more credentials in terms of overseeing the the administration of things than Trump does.

It is truly terrifying that "cesspit" has become a very appropriate term to describe what the GOP has become, considering how much influence the GOP has over what is still the most powerful country on Earth.

You know, what really irritates me is that it's entirely possible if Trump doesn't fuck up TOO badly that he might end up being reelected simply because he's shameless enough to take credit for Obama's policies that are starting to pay off in regards to the economy and immigration without looking like he's bullshitting.

[up] Yeah, that worries me too. We really don't want to legitimize or normalize someone like him after everything he's said and done. It sets a very bad precedent.

[up][up][up]It would be not unlike what happened with Reagan benefiting from Fed Chair Paul Volcker easing interest rates in 1982. That more then anything was what lead to "morning in america".

[up][up][up][up]That's pretty standard political behaviour. It's normal for politicians in power to take the credit for the fruition of work that was performed by their predecessors, especially when they're from the opposition's party.

[up] It's pretty standard, but it's really not particularly appealing if blind luck/brilliant opportunism allows Trump to legitimize his particular brand of populism.

[up][up]And sometimes it goes the other way around, as Obama was somehow guilty of all the things that happen in the Bush administration.

it is really annoying

The hell. Blanket bans on lobbyists isn't going to be the solution either, as a lot of them are essentially knowledgeable outsiders who are around to provide info on issues politicians don't have time to become experts in. This is throwing the baby out with the bathwater while pretending to tackle the issue of dirty cribs.

You know it's going to work in terms of placating his base too. I'm sure several people are going around saying "see he really DID drain the swamp!!! he'll fix everything!!!", because they don't actually understand how politics work and want to believe in an insipid strongman myth.

[up]Yeah, I have to said that Donald proposals, apart of being racist are pretty much magic tricks: "And now I will make a Wall apear in front of you!" "I will made all muslims float and throw away back to their countries!"

[up] And I also have a terrible feeling, much like a certain Venezuelan populist, that he'll create a massive economic bubble ready to burst as soon as he's comfortably out of office.

Ted Cruz has told confidants he’s interested in serving as attorney general in the Trump administration, according to two sources familiar with the conversations.

Ugh Cruz. Honestly I'm not sure which one's the worst; him, Pence, or Trump.
