Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

As I've thought about this turn of events more and more, I realize now that fear is the central emotion behind all of this. There's hate too, but more on that later.
Humans are naturally panicky. We fear everything that we don't know and that we haven't been thought to believe is normal. When something goes wrong, we instantly look for someone to blame. And we will almost always blame those who are different from us in some way, because we don't understand them. Because we don't know them, because we don't understand their experiences, it's easy to just not register them as a person and see this as an "us vs them" in our minds. And when people are afraid, they don't act rationally. When you're consumed by fear, you do things that you wouldn't have done otherwise just to put that fear at bay.
And that fear leads to hate. I think that in a lot of cases you can't really separate the two, because they feed into one another. Antisemitism is old as time, but the most powerful example of it in recent recorded history was motivated by fear, fear that they were destroying Germany. White supremacism exists because of certain white people's fragile conception of self, to the point where anyone different from them is a threat against their identity. There's a reason why various "isms" actually have "phobia" attached to the end.
Donald Trump's rise was a triumph of fear.
If we see the twilight of human civilization this century, it will have been fear, ignorance and apathy that got us there.

Trump's transition team has yet to call either the Pentagon or the State Department.

Maybe we'll all get lucky, and the Trump admin will only horribly mismanage things, instead of malevolently tearing down human civilization?
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Because you would rather see the world end in nuclear fire than shake hands with a black person.
Besides, you live in the country. It's going to be those city folks that get hit by the bombs. And most of them are the minorities you hate.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. It's basically the choice between a driver who's asleep at the wheel, and a driver who's actively trying to crash the car. Just different roads to the same destination - that destination being, everybody involved being completely fucked.
If - and though I dread to say it, when - the government implements a nationwide Muslim registry, that will officially be it as far as I'm concerned. The U.S. will have turned into a fascist nation, and things will only get worse.
And they'll grease it through at first, as this
thread points out. It'll come by inches. Same with all of the other horrible civil rights violations Trump and his cronies are going to try to implement. One little step at a time, and only when you look back do you realize how much we've lost.
I foresee many, many, more protests in the future. And they are not going to be pretty, even by the standards of protests.
If I happen to be in earshot of a Trump supporter, my last words will be "Don't blame me. I voted for Hillary Clinton."

Disgusted, but not surprisedI think that the worst feeling for me, especially in relation to climate change, is that my generation is going to get hit just as hard as it does for everyone despite us not having a hand in this and we're going to have to be the ones who will have to pick up the mess afterwards.

No, not really.
If anything I Told You So is an extremely cold comfort.

I mean, if it was voluntary, sure.
But mandatory? I'd have to draw the line there.

I think a physical letter might be better, actually - there's a guarantee that they'll at least open the envelope.
At least, I think this is the case - I'm not entirely sure. Can anyone else confirm?

Oh God! Natural light!

Trump has been compared to Silvio Berlusconi too.
Maybe we should be asking Italians for tips on how to do deal with life under Trump.
