Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

On the subject of nuclear power, I've heard that thorium reactors make for a good and relatively easily controllable means of generating fission-based nuclear energy. Thorium is also a much more common reagent than uranium and frequently appears as a byproduct of rare earth metal mining. However, they doesn't have the potential generate weapons-grade plutonium like uranium reactors do, so they don't have many advocates in government.

: Yeah, that's one thing that bugs me about US politics: Eco-topics seem to be too "boring" for both the average voter and average politician to concern themselves with, unlike much more "important" issues like "protecting AMERICAN culture's purity from evil immigrants" and the like.

"It is very easy to be kind; the difficulty lies in being just."I've actually have had a hypothesis that Romney would exploit Trump and his supporters' fanaticism to ride back into prominence by appealing as the Only Sane Man to mainstream society.

I would say they're displaying incompetence right now given that people keep leaving their appointments, among other things. People are afraid to be associated with this dumpster of an administration because they think it'll kill their careers.
That may not last but it's at best highly disfunctional and speaks poorly of their ability to actually govern the country.

Apparently even Ben Carson doesn't want to be part of this administration. One of his friends claimed that Carson thinks he lacks the experience to take a high level government job.
Considering the guy ran for President, that's obviously a bullshit excuse. The real reason is probably because even he realizes the Trump administration is a horror show.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThe Trump administration also has a site
in which anyone can apply and it doesn't look like there's much vetting involved. They're way in over their heads.
I know a couple of people who've put in applications under the name of fictional characters for a laugh, sparnetly it's totally open for anyone to apply under any name and with any details.
