Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

George Soros made himself a huge deal of money in stock trading, hedge funds and currency speculation
. After figuring that he'd earned enough to last himself a lifetime, he decided to enter the world of philanthropy.
He started out trying to fund folks working towards establishing functioning democracies in Eastern Europe and Russia. Well, we know how that turned out.
So nowadays he funds organisations ostensibly on the left in the US. This has went over with the American Far Right about as well as you expect it to.
His Jewish heritage has also resulted in a lot of blatantly anti-Semitic rhetoric and conspiracy theories launched his way by pretty much everyone with a large audience who has a reason to dislike him, from Bill O'Reilly to Mahathir Mohamad.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotThe closest comparison I can think of is the liberal equivalent of the Koch brothers, but where their political business is relatively straightforward and scrutinized accordingly, Soros is accused of having a hand in everything. At least from what I've seen.

The party doesn't have a core leader at the moment, but in the face of the complete fuck up by the Third Wayers, you're probably going to see Warren, Ellison and Sanders rise in political weight in the party. Nancy Pelosi is the leader in the House and Schumer is the leader in the Senate. And to be fair, for the most part, parties are typically multi-polar in terms of influence. And Schumer's essentially signaled he's behind the Progressive Wing's power players (Ellison, Warren, Sanders) even if he's more in line with the Third Way wing.
But in all likelihood, the Progressive wing is going to be ascendant in terms of power and weight. It's like how Shinra noted months ago, the Republicans' war hawk wing was essentially discredited because of the Bush Jr. Administration, leading to the Tea Party/Evangelical wing.
Sanders isn't going to be the De Facto leader but it would be absurd to assume he isn't going to be of significant influence within the power structure of the Party going forward. (Especially when he and Warren are very much liked by the party's younger voters)

Obama I'm not sure what wing of the party he's quite in. I'm pretty sure he's more tied to the Third Way wing in terms of influence and who he's working with, but he's also avoided discrediting himself by backing a fair number of the Progressive Wing's policies while in office. (And remains Cool Old Guy with younger voters within reason.). So Obama and other similar politicians are likely to have a lot of weight. (I'm thinking Schumer is in this category of More from the Third Way branch, but knows which way the wind is blowing.)
What mostly got decapitated here was the Third Way and The "Clinton Machine" as it's called. Hillary herself I see walking away gracefully, but horey shit the Centrist wonks, punditry and the like that mushroomed from the Clinton and co allies' takeover of the party in the 80s and 90s are going to be hissing, howling and screaming as their mix of Left Social Positions and Right Wing Economic Positions are going to be pushed against by the Progressive Wing.
[Drinks]
- Anti-Trump protests, accusations that George Soros hired them, and more Twitter stuff related to it.
- /b/ experiencing buyer's remorse.
- A Milosevic comparison
.
- The FBI may have been willfully ignorant over Trump's Russian ties
.
- Zuckerburg and Co. trying to downplay the role of disinformation in this election cycle
.
- A report suggested that all coal power plants in First World countries must be shut down by 2030 to meet the 2 degrees Celsius temperature change goal
, unless you want to try Panchaea.
- More Canadians suggesting that the US West Coast join them.
- Arguments over income taxation.
- Arguments for and against punishing Rust Belt voters for voting against their own long term interests.
Well, those are what I think are the highlights.
Winner!

.
That looks like it could prove to be a pretty cold comfort (or a far-too-warm warm comfort, more like), since Trump and his Death Eaters are indeed already looking into ways to weasel out of it,
four-year stipulation or no four-year stipulation. It's not like the future of the entire human race could be on the line or anything.
You know, as shit as 2016 has been as a year? Something tells me we ain't seen nothing yet.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Right now our priority shouldn't be 2020 but 2018. I don't know what the chances are, IIRC there are more vulnerable Democratic seats than Republican but they only have to add two more to take control.
Also there are Canadians encouraging the west coast to defect? Why not the northeast? (Pout)
Trump delenda estPresident Elect Trump begins attacking the New York Times
for their unflattering coverage of his candidacy.
These are going to be a very long and exasperating 4 years.

Who the fuck is George Soros anyway, beyond some vague boogeyman of the right? He gets blamed for just about everything people don't like about the left. Even my Republican uncles keep accusing him of everything under the sun.
