The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up]Which, once again, proves that liberals are held to a higher standard.

As far as American politics is concern, the conservatives do the exact same thing.

It's a bit more complicated than what I said. But that's kind of the point. Their own standards are too high. So high that any small divergence, or merely focusing on causes you can more likely win, brands you as lazy at best, or a monster at worst..

So the veterans are still screwed. I guess the cool weapons and vehicles are more important than the ones who use them. Solid logic there.

The inhabitants of the territories are also still screwed. I guess they are still alien races that can't understand Anglo-Saxon law. Patronizing bigotry at its finest.

Too bad, the GOP isn't going to give a damn about the veterans. And no party is going to give a damn about the territories since you need to be able to vote to matter. Those absent voters should just give their rights to them. Trump presidency has basically doom them all and so many more.

[up] There is logic there but it's god damn fucked up logic. A vet is done serving his country thus is no use to said country so why waste resources and continue to pay and/or keep them alive?

Yeah it's fucked up and no one really seems to get that you should never join the military to look out for your country cause it ain't looking out for you.

Well that's promising. It's utterly hollow but the fact that he's even attempting PR is a promising sign that he's being kept on a leash by SOMETHING.

Or maybe he's afraid of consequences. Spoiled brats which were born with golden, diamond-encrusted spoons in their mouths may be cheeky until they suddenly have to do something non-trivial, then they become cowards.

Those pictures of Trump touring the White House though. He looks miserable. He's obviously realizing that the job will chain him to D.C., on top of the fact that he gets the occasional speech, but no more rallies until 2020. He'll have people watching him all the time, he'll get a crappy phone that probably won't have twitter access, and he'll need to stay focused on the Presidency for four years unless he wants to look like a loser.

I've heard, as well, that Trump flew back to New York all the time during his campaign because he can't stand sleeping anywhere but Trump Tower. Good luck with that, because as the President, he'll need to be accessible at all times, and they'll need to make sure that he isn't trying to run his businesses from behind the scenes. Trump Tower won't cut it. It's why previous presidents have a curiously limited list of vacation destinations.

There's a theory that the trump team tweets from an iphone will trump uses an android, I'm curious which tweet came from which device.

Or perhaps more morbidly the secret service has briefed him on just how hated he is and how much that can shorten his life expectancy.

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

Was It Really Worth It? anyone?

I think Trump is having a huge And Then What?? moment because he really didn't expect to win. His pictures from the election results and his visit to the White House don't show a man that is particularly happy with the results either.

Re: something from last page: LGBT people should not be pinning the blame for this election on black voters. Demographic data makes it pretty obvious that it was white America who threw them under the bus.

Ugh, as far as minorities go right now, the LGBTs have my sympathy most of all. Latinos and African Americans (if voter suppression wasn't in play, we'll have to wait and see) as a group(s) helped get Trump elected, by voting for him/not voting for Clinton in sufficient. They, along with rural/mid-west whites, are partially to blame with what is coming next. But LGBTs don't have the numbers or geographic concentration to make a difference.

As if there aren't queer PoC who won't suffer because of Trump's policies, because LGBT and black or Latino are exclusive terminology...

But anyway, while it's true that Trump managed to (Somehow, considering the contemptible things he's said about black people over the years) get a slightly higher amount of the black vote than Romney did at 8% compared to 6%, 88% of black people still voted for Hillary.

In the end, it simply didn't make much a difference compared to the amount of white people who voted for Trump.

@Zendervai and Angelus Nox: Trump's wanted this election for years, but I think that he is beginning to learn that being the President isn't the most fun job in the world. There are a lot of people who are counting on this guy to do what is best for them, and a lot of people whose lives are going to be affected by the decisions he makes. Running a business is one thing, but being the chief executive of a government is an entirely different affair.

Is it really that more black people voted for Trump over Romney, and not that it stayed the same or decreased slightly, but the decrease from white and other ethnic voters who didn't vote for Trump was even lower?
