Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A muslim, immigrant woman explains why she voted for Trump.

So, she thinks the "Islamic State of Iraq and Levant" is the "politically correct" name for the Islamic State, which kinda show her ignorance and her willingness to buy into the the "anti political correctness" rhetoric.
I am kinda too tired to argue everything that woman got wrongnote , but before someone says I am demonizing that woman, I am not. Calling people ignorant is not demoralizing them. Being ignorant is not a personal failure. People can't help (not) knowing what they (don't) know. And it is really not anyone's fault in specific it is like that. The only solution is to better the education of the country as a whole, but that doesn't happen overnight.

Whether she is right or not, her perspective is still important.
We're not gonna manage to avoid stuff like this if we don't understand how people like her think.
Just correcting her is not good enough, we have to get down on her level and show ourselves willing to talk calmly.

I know, I have nothing against you posting it here. But my point is, her perspective comes from ignorance. I've seem people here being annoyed at people daring to call Trump supporters ignorant, but that is just how it is, for most of them. What is important is to realize that ignorance is not a personal failure. It is not her fault she was dupped by Trump's campaign.

That's fair.
I simply don't think that approach will work for her, or a lot of others.
If you really want to change someone you have to be willing to get to know that individual person intimately enough to know the correct things to say and do around them and adapt yourself to that. And know how to do them correctly.
It takes patience and dedication to a level it would be downright unhealthy for most people to try, but that's the only way I found that it works.
That, and simply waiting it out. Hoping they have enough time and deep personal incidents in their lives that they change their mind. Or enough time to see their choices didn't work.
Unfortunately neither work all the time, for several reasons.

"Please crush me with your heels Esdeath-sama!I don't think that there is that much excuse for ignorance if you are living in a country which offers schooling for everyone and is technological advanced enough that information is easily accessible...to quote Kant: "Aufklärung ist der Ausgang des Menschen aus seiner selbst verschuldeten Unmündigkeit." - "Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed immaturity."
Emphasis on self-imposed.
From what's been said in this thread in the past, there's been quite an effort by some politicians in the US to keep people uneducated (defunding public schools, imposing educational programs based on religious dogma instead of science, promotion of anti-intelectualism, etc), so I'm not sure how much immaturity is self-imposed there.
Well, in this particular case the only thing you have to do is to watch the actual debates to get a sense of the candidates.
This is, btw, something the US really should do, regulate the election process better. A one year long campaign is really ridiculous. Honestly, in an ideal world, it should be forbidden to advertise freely for a specific party.
They used to have something that more or less discouraged one-sidedness
. It was revoked on the grounds of "Free Speech".

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVIs an anti-Daesh Arabic slur even politically correct?
Fairness doctrine: While it would certainly ensure various critical subjects entered the public eye, it probably would provide even more fuel for dumb South Park viewers.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotYeah, all those women who voted for Trump (read: 42%) in this country are misogynistic, as are all the "racist" minorities who voted for Trump (read: 8% black, 29% Hispanic, 29% Asian, 37% other).

@Ldragon: Many reasons. Some people voted for him out of overt racism (this includes the KKK and literal Nazis). Some voted for him out of sexism. Some voted for him out of blind party loyalty. Some voted for him out of a misplaced sense that he had their best interests at heart (those Rust Belt people who think he can bring their jobs back, even though no amount of discrimination, deregulation, and protectionism can turn back the clock on the march of technology that actually took their jobs - for example, coal mining isn't dying because of foreigners or immigrants or green energy, it's dyimg because of automation making most of the actual miners obsolete and the rise of natural gas as the primary fossil fuel for electrical generation). Some voted for him because they think Hillary is a criminal. Some voted for him because they just wanted to "send a message" to "the elites in Washington".
