Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Tactical Fox
A while ago I got one of my friends to take the "Trump or Mussolini" quiz. We noted that the Mussolini quotes can be identified by being better written. My friend's complaint: "how is it that Mussolini is coming off better than someone in this conversation? When did he become the metric for anything other than worst people to run Italy?"

Well, comic book super villains actually are competent when it comes to running stuff.
Trump isn't.
I can easily imagine Lex and Doom being offended of being compared to Trump on the account they aren't incompetent and their plans actually make sense.
On Mussolini and Trump, I think the main similarities over the two is how both appealed to machismo, and had that narcissistic drive to put their faces everywhere.

Inter arma enim silent legesI don't think it's fair to say Berlusconi was even worse than Mussolini. The latter might have been more competent in some ways but come on, Berlusconi didn't start multiple wars or sign the Tripartite pact or commit all sorts of war crimes.
Berlusconi, though, is very similar to Trump in more ways than Trump supporters should feel comfortable about.
(Also, one Roman emperor worth mentioning in this context might be Caligula; but the caveat, as always with Roman rulers, is that latter generations have done whatever they wanted with the narrative that would survive to our days, so it just might be possible Caligula and Nero weren't even really quite as bad as they're thought to have been. Then again, maybe they really were that horrible - in which case at least one of them was worse than Mussolini.)
What a derail...
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.Okay, okay, this one is a new one that I haven't heard before.
Quote from my feed...sigh again.
Forgetting all the absurdities and twisting of facts here...
Is this implicitly comparing political negotiation as if you were buying a car or something similar where the dealer meets you halfway?
Tell me I'm reading this wrong, because I refuse to believe someone can be this naive about how politics work.
New Survey coming this weekend!I'm anticipating a Hillary Clinton inaugaration where, just as she's being sworn in, Trump shows up onstage, grabs the microphone away, and says, "Yo, Hillary, I'm really happy for you, Imma let you finish, but I had one of the best Presidential campaigns of all time!"

Out of curiosity, how do you think politics works?
Because the example Sanders supporters can most easily cite is the Democratic Primary itself, where Sanders stuck to his guns and made a very clear case on what a large portion of Democratic voters wanted, and then we wind up with "the most progressive platform the Democrats have ever had."
The fact that there are still holdouts who refuse to accept even that is a major annoyance for me, personally. Whether or not Clinton will deliver on the platform is a separate argument.

Yeah I'm not too confident in Hilary's liberal positions. It's so painfully obvious that she's adopting Bernie's platform to sway the oh so volatile millenial vote that it's hard to think she'll really stick to them come January.
The best hope at pushing Hilary towards liberal issues is to elect a liberal leaning Senate that in turn pushes Hilary towards liberal Supreme Court Justices. Trump might have actually paved the way for a Democratic clean coup.
Personally for me it is a mix of Exodus - March of the Sycophants
, Slayer - Pride in Prejudice
and Fear Factory - Cyberwaste
Pretty sure me and Handle will be racing to post this on election day.

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

We're legitimately without a hint of sarcasm or irony comparing one of our Presidential candidates to Comic Book super villains.
Just let that sink in for a moment...
New Survey coming this weekend!
