The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

She's repeating the same nonsense far-left non-voters told themselves in 2000: that if the far-right buffoon gets elected, it will embolden the left to start a revolution.

Which was bullshit, because the Bush presidency plunged us into two wars and a debt of $10.6 trillion with no liberal revolution in sight.

That's right, boys. Mondo cool.

[up]x5: That's completely idiotic, though. A Republican president can do untold, generational damage to the progressive cause simply by existing. I mean, sure, they might kill the GOP as a brand even more and appeal to accelerationists who want the country extra chaotic, but after the dust settles, the Supreme Court will still have their nominees, for instance.

[up][up][up]I really like how the song turned into an ominous tone when the Trump's part began.

i love trump's part of the rap

not because i agree with it but because it has an aire of pure maliciousness and is very ominous (and because the wordplay is overall better)

It also doesn't contain a single verifiably true statement. Which is one of the problems with ERB having done this. Between this (and the vaguely misogynistic crap from "Lincoln" about her "creepy smile") and the transphobia of the "Bruce Jenner vs Bruce Banner" rap I'm really losing all interest in ERB.

[up]Why would an actor playing Trump says the truth when the original doesn't? That would be a pretty bad actor.

On a more depressing note, a black church in Mississippi was burned and was spray painted "Vote Trump".

Yes, there already are claims that this was a false flag.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

[up][up][up][up]I mean, yeah, the basic narrative of this was Lincoln swooping in to save Clinton from Trump, and then berating her for not winning without his help. What the heck is that?

[up][up]I'm not sure what to say about that. Kind of speaks for itself.

Similar dynamic played out when ERB did Obama v. Romney. "You! I wanna like you! Don't talk about change, just do it! I fought for what was on my brain until a bullet went through it!"

First time I've heard people say the ERB wasn't pro-Clinton enough. I thought it was the Trump supporters who hated it.

[up][up][up]Are you trying to suggest that the criticism they would have leveled at Sanders would have been rooted in misogyny? Because that seems unlikely.

[up][up]And that was still an idiotic, false equivalence criticism. One that, if anything, becomes even stupider coming from Lincoln. Yeah, Lincoln was able to get a lot more of the legislation he wanted passed than Obama did. You know why? It was because most of his opponents had joined the Confederacy.

[up]The Trump supporters hate anything and everything that isn't worshiping their Fuhrer. In any case, this isn't as bad as it could have been but it still gives into false equivalency BS. About the only thing I can say for it is that it's mildly better than Death Battle's attempt on the subject (which has Trump and Clinton die fighting one another and Captain America becoming president-for-life; because nothing says you love democracy like an ending like that).

Then allow me to try again—if Sanders had, somehow, managed to become the candidate, ERB!Lincoln would not be going after him for his "creepy smile" or other stereotypically misogynistic criticisms.

I don't understand how saying someone has a "creepy smile" is misogynistic. it just sounds like a generic insult.

Like, people say that about some dudes too.

How is that misogynistic? Regardless of how creepy her smile actually is, it's certainly memetic enough that it would end up in there.

I literally have no idea how calling someone's smile creepy is instantly an offense to women everywhere.

They made an issue of her appearance instead of any policies she holds. A common problem for women in power is that people/media make an big deal about their looks rather than supporting or criticizing the issues at hand. Dudes normally get a pass on this.

It's acting as though her appearance is more important than her effectiveness as a politician. Women constantly have to make sure that they not only do a perfect job, but that they look perfect as they do it. Hillary gets flak all the time for her appearance.

I think his point is that the insult being leveled at her and women in general, is because of misogyny, so them doing it is misogynistic.

Edit: This video goes over it well, I think.

Personally, I've always thought her smiled came off as forced, but not really "creepy" and it's never really bothered me. Some people just can't smile genuinely on command. I'm one of those people two.

But anyway, isn't the point of Epic Rap Battle is to level common complaints about characters/people in rap form. I don't think whether the complaint in question is actually valid is a part of it.
