The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up][up] Technically, she did speak on the issue through her campaign manager.

"Now, all of the parties involved — including the federal government, the pipeline company and contractors, the state of North Dakota, and the tribes — need to find a path forward that serves the broadest public interest," campaign spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa said in Clinton's only major public remarks on the pipeline last week. "As that happens, it's important that on the ground in North Dakota, everyone respects demonstrators' rights to protest peacefully, and workers' rights to do their jobs safely."

[up][up] Ugh, is there anything Trump related that is not riddled with corruption and incompetence?

Even that new D.C. hotel was overbudget and a year behind schedule, made with cheap Chinese steel, lost both of the high-class restaurants it was going to have on the first floor thanks to Trump's idiotic xenophobic racist remarks on the campaign trail, and couldn't fill all the rooms even after slashing the rates in half!

And millions of Americans want this guy to be POTUS?! *head meets desk*

Mark Cuban reckons there are more important things than retaining Dallas Mavericks fans.

“You know what, when it’s all said and done, I’d rather lose every penny than have Trump as president because I care more about the future of my family, my children than I do about my pocketbook," Cuban said. "And so if it means we play to empty arenas, I’m down with that."

Well, at least one person is using footage of Russian election cheating in a bid to claim that there is cheating going on in early voting.

It looks like white supremicist groups are getting organized about poll-watching

The representative, who did not provide his name, went on to explain, "Many polling locations are in schools, and black schools are so disorderly that pretty much any official-looking white person with a clipboard can gain access to them ahead of time and set up a hidden camera. You don't really ever even have to speak with an adult. Simply walk in like you belong there and no one even asks you why you are there. So we usually go in teams of two, one person driving and one person dressed as a blue collar worker with a clipboard, and we set up a hidden camera in the school cafeteria. Go during lunchtime and the teachers are all so busy trying to contain the kids that no one says anything. We already have a few set up."

“We also have some teams going in to the ghettos in Philly with 40s and weed to give out to the local residents, which we think will lead to more of them staying home. We have had success with this in the past,” wrote the representative of The Right Stuff.biz, who said four teams of two employed this tactic in Detroit during the Democratic primary in an effort to help Bernie Sanders. POLITICO could not independently verify his claims.

[up][up]It can't be fake I saw it on my uncle's facebook feed!

Oh lord the comments, those who took the bait fell for it and the rest of the Trumpteers still claim this is what his happening in the US. The only way you can put sense in the heads of those people is if you write "sense" in a hammer and bash their heads with it. I can't tell if those people are dense on purpose or that fucking stupid.

[up] 7 days, folks. Well, more like 14, accounting for the week or so after that the internet has a collective aneurysm. But after 7 days you can start to sleep easy, after 14 days things settle back down to "normal", for the time being. We ride out the last few weeks of Obama, and then god knows what happens from there.

Police shot in Iowa: Two officers were killed in ambush shootings; a suspect has been identified and taken into custody. Before the right-wing media starts masturbating to #BLM hate, it's a white dude. I wonder how that fits their narrative.

PA hasn't been a swing state since the 80s. Even in elections the GOP has won (88, 00, and 04) PA broke blue.

And given that literally everyone except DC and Minnesota voted for Reagan, 84 should hardly count.

PA is going to be more of a swing state now and going forward (assuming demographic dynamics don't change wildly) - David Wasserman at 538 pointed out back in May that the state has been sliding towards Republican for the past six elections (the state has gone Democrat save in '84, but by smaller margins on average). He cites Western PA going more and more Republican as the reason.

It will probably still go Clinton this time around, but going forward it may not be such a lock for Democrats.

The Democrats have been training a fleet of lawyers to go to polling stations and help prevent voter intimidation.

538 is full of shit. Lawrence O'Donnell reported last night on MSNBC that surveys of early voters in Florida show Hillary Clinton winning them by over 50 points — that's her margin, not her percentage of the total vote. What makes this happen is 28% of Republicans crossing party lines to vote against Trump. (Notably, they are not doing the same in the Senate election, indicating that they remain loyal to their party in a broader sense.)

If that turns out to be accurate and representative, this is going to be a legendary blowout.

Lawrence also interviewed a former intelligence officer who believes Trump to have been actually compromised by Russian agents, not merely shilling for Putin out of an overweening affection for autocrats.

Gotta remember that when a 538 article says that a thing could happen it doesn't mean it's likely to happen, just that it's something with at least a few percentage points of happening.

[up]That.

Also, Nate Silver himself has said you should never take what one person said on the matter as gospel, even if they do have a pretty good record. He includes himself, and presumably all those that work with him in that statement.

[up][up]Yes, but when the media is paying Silver reverence as some kind of latter-day prophet, he has a responsibility for the consequences of what he says. In particular, he knows damn well that the media will seize on any opportunity to play up the horse race, and even direct the narrative to make it seem closer than it is.
