Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

CNN cuts ties with Donna Brazile after hacked emails show she gave Clinton campaign debate questions
Oh for the love of God, how long is this going to drag on?!
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. For the sanders debate, since they don't mention that in the title.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Let's calm down with the tinfoil hats about russia, guys
. (The article more or less says the connection is just as likely to be the result of spam mail.
Also, This guy
gives more detail about why it's probably nothing.
The DNC and the RNC have never been neutral in any election, it's their job to lead the narrative to the convention and help from there. Feeding to questions to one candidate and not the other is underhanded but not unprecedented.
The RNC tried to go more hands off this election and they got Trump so it's not entirely unwarranted as well especially considering how dangerous the Bern ended up being vs the party platform. I wouldn't be surprised if they did the same vs Obama actually and the RNC has probably done worse.
the absolute scariest thing in this election, the Supreme Court
I mean holy freaken crap, this would be literally the worst.

Seeing major runs on gas stations in rural areas AGAIN, looks like every station withing maybe 50 miles of me is out of gas and police are responding to people in rural areas getting violent in the lines.
No info on what caused the explosion other than the spot where it happened was undergoing maintenance. 1 confirmed dead and they're working to contain the fire. The current drought conditions in the south coupled with dry tinder from the fall certainly aren't helping things.

I would imagine all three to be rather overwhelmed in today's political climate.
We don't know what kind of policies they'd have regarding lgbt and minority protection.
We don't know how they'd handle aggressive Cold War remnant parties.
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youIt's not like all those people were universally popular in their time. Lincoln in particular was so unpopular that his unpopularity was the spark that started the Civil War, and he was eventually assassinated. Which, you know, shows how much people hated him for what he did. The best decisions aren't necessarily the most popular.
For all we know, Hillary Clinton will go down in history as one of the greatest presidents ever.

Roosevelt also survived an attempted assassination. Frankly, I'd say the best presidents we've had are the ones who dragged the country forward, kicking and screaming, against its will. If no one hates you with all their heart, then you're probably not doing anything interesting enough to be remembered for.
Edit: I suspect that history will remember Obama mostly for pushing national healthcare, which will (hopefully) be refined by his successors.

Ah yes, traits symbolic of our greatest President, Andrew Jackson, who dragged the Indians kicking and screaming out of the southeastern United States.
You should probably correct that to "Presidents that push views that I personally agree with against the wishes of powers that I personally disagree with".
I suspect we'll wind up seeing Obama in generally better lights, as we do Clinton, and Bush will likely be judged under a harsher glare for the past decade of war in the Middle East. Though none will be seen as the "best/worst" President. Obamacare will be one of his greatest pieces of legacy, though future refinement (or lack of it) will be key to whether it will be remembered as a good thing or a bad thing.
I have my issues with Clinton. She hasn't been proven to have done anything "legally wrong" yet in the sense of things that she she should go to jail for (despite popular belief), but if her administration is run like the DNC is being currently run we have some problems on our way. The best hope, personally speaking, for her administration is that the Senate and/or the House come out of this election more Democratic leaning, which will help towards making the lawmaking process slightly more tolerable. And a vote for her is a physical vote against Trump and a metaphorical vote against the alt-right resurgence, which is the real key goal here.
It turns out that Donald Trump is still not paying the people he contracts to do work for him
— in this case, he's trying to stiff pollster Tony Fabrizio, whom he hired in May, of approximately $767,000. This is a common theme for Trump's business operations, which are legendary for short-paying contractors and then tying them up in expensive legal battles which they cannot afford to pursue. But he'll help support small businesses, yo!
Put another way, being hated can be a sign that you're doing a good job, but it can also be a sign that you're doing a bad job.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

Yeah it really is. Still, one could take that as NATO antagonizing the Russians for no real reason.
Or at the very least slant the story that way and justify military buildup and expansion to the general populace.
Oh really when?
