Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

More lawsuits this time, and it's not just sexual.
To summarize briefly, Trump now owes over $776k in unpaid fees, fines and bills, from, according to USA TODAY, includes 200 mechanic's liens, and 24 violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act since 2005 in refusing to pay minimum wage and overtime alone.
And, from the Fox News article, Trump's reason is that he was making withholding payment "a part of his business strategy".
And somehow he's risen to an 11% chance of victory in the New York Times' Upshot.
I can't...
I just can't....
Then please stop with the posting habits that look like concern trolling. kthxbye.
Russia doesn't need "agents on the inside", it just needs to keep playing the factions and the useful idiots against each other so we stop interfering in their ambitions. There's a fine line between rational caution and irrational paranoia and panicked declarations that they're infiltrating all the things...well we saw what that got us in the Cold War.
The info about the Russia connection Coney supposedly wanted to suppress was released anyway; all he did in effect was pointedly not sign off on it. Mostly all he achieved is looking hypocritical.
1. I wasn't thinking that Comey actually wants Trump to win, more that he was seeing a Clinton landslide (which prior to Thursday looked like a plausible outcome) more unacceptable.
2. Can we make it a habit of tagging sarcasm as such because of Poe's Law?
The damned queen and the relentless knight.

This election is probably the single goddamn mess I have lived through. I've been doing my best to keep up, in spite of the occasional anxiety attack. That said, I'm very optimistic things will work out. Still, it's troubling to see Trump have a double-digit chance like this, considering what he preaches.

If the 2016 election was a TV show it'd be critically panned for being so unrealistic and ridiculous.
The TV Tropes page would be Trope Overdosed and the Headscratchers page would be Up To Eleven.
New Survey coming this weekend!Donald Trump doesn't even seem like a real person to me, with all the complex and nuance that fiction rarely (unless it's a Long Runner) capture.
He literally seems like a caricature of an 80s cartoon villain come to life.
New Survey coming this weekend! The United States is a fictional country, and not a very well written one. (Some of you might remember that I posit this hypothesis somewhat frequently.)
In more serious news:
Hillary Clinton has held some kind of campaign event at an Arsenal fan pub in Miami
. Gunner-fan Clinton confirmed? (Almost certainly not. As if she cared which English football club a particular pub is associated with.)
"Removed Reality Is Unrealistic: This is not reality, BleyeEpic. Stop posting this trope- there's no way something like this could actually happen. Trump is almost cartoonishly evil and there's absolutely NO way he'd garner that much support, especially after the racial equality movements in the 60s! And Russians trying to infiltrate and influence the government? That functions off of an outdated stereotype from the Cold War. And there's no way presidential candidates would actually make fun of each other on TWITTER of all things."

Do you want to just come out of the Republican closet and admit to being a Trump supporter? Because you do this every time that something critical of Trump is posted. That the Russians got involved has been confirmed by every major intelligence agency. You have any reason at all why we should doubt that?

And wasn't there that cringeworthy moment last election where Hermain Cain quoted from the Pokemon movie? And this election of Hillary trying to be 'current' and telling young people to Pokemon GO to the polls?
Yeah, this election has been surreal.

Sorry to disappoint, but I'm not really a Republican. I guess you could say I'm what you would call 'far right' but I make it a point to lurk and make the occasional comment at places like this, as well at far right forums. Being in an Echo chamber is a bad idea.

That's fairly accurate. We have trouble with the concept of complex problems. What we really want is a Sauron or Palpatine that can be defeated by a plucky band of heroes exercising their Second Amendment rights.
It's a consequence of our revolutionary culture. Much of our politics is about trying to figure out who the villain is. Is it Putin? Kim Jong-un? Various Mexicans? Which dragon needs to be slain so our economy will work?

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.The letter saying that it was Russian signed by basically all the big names in US intelegence agencies, which we are now learning the FBI failed to sign not because they didn't think it was Russia but because they felt saying that it was Russia would influence the election.

Even progressives fall for it, breaking up the big banks is an idea that in part comes from a desire to see a monster slain heroically.

Yeah I'd be shocked if the Russians want a Trump win, most likely they want a close run thing so that Clinton has to spend years focused on domestic issues instead of foreign policy ones.
