Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

No, they are "accelerationists" or whatever the proper spelling is. The folks who think the progressive revolution can only happen from a maximum regressive environment. Worked out "well" for the Weimar Republic, ya know.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMore frightening to me is that Trump is still advocating for Waterboarding and "much worse" to be used in the war on Terror
.
"These savages are chopping off heads, drowning people. This is medieval times and then we can't do waterboarding? 'It's far too tough,'" Trump said, mocking critics of the technique used by the CIA in interrogations of terror suspects under President George W. Bush's post-9/11 administration.
Trump has previously called for reinstating waterboarding and "much worse" methods of torture if he becomes president.
"We have to be tough and we have to be smart. And we have to be in some cases pretty vicious I have to tell you," he added.
This is one of those rare topics that will get me fucking livid - sinking to their level just means they've officially won the war of ideology, as they held true to theirs even when faced with overwhelming force, while we abandoned ours out of fear and/or lust for vengeance.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Yes! We all know about this and we are all aware of this because we have an active social circle pointing out when this happens and where this happens and why it's bad.
But for everyone else? They don't have the same circles that push political rhetoric and research. Their facebooks and newsfeeds are filled with friends' statuses about how awful their day is and stupid memes that don't have any research put into them and how the latest sports team dropped the game in the last minute.
It's why Trump's sexism only significantly hurt him after the one video went viral. That way everyone knew about it.
Yet even still a lot of people aren't in progressive social circles- brushing it off as locker room talk or a mistake made in the past.
Yes, doing research will reveal how awful Trump is and how his policies are actively detrimental. But people don't want to do the research. They want to relax and not deal with something as complicated and complex as politics can be- especially when both sides are pushing opposite stories.
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeExcept it is. The Democrats are trying to get them out fo the cycle of welfare, the Medicaid expansion, stimulus programs, educational spending so that people can get the education needed for good quality jobs, the ability to unionise and demand better wages, workers rights that would enable them to not be fired so easily, less power for big business to run roughshod all over small businesses. All Democrat ideas blocked by Republicans, the Republicans who the people you're talking about keep electing.
You ever tried to help someone who doesn't want your help and is more loyal to their abuser then to you the person trying to help them? It's really fucking hard.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranOkay, if Trump becomes President, I have an idea.
Let's all give the simultaneous message:
May God have Mercy on us all.
Course, if Clinton becomes President, let's see how long it will take for Bill and Monica to get photographed having dinner together.
I'll vote third party. Whoever the fuck that is.
I'm not exactly a ray of sunshine.

That is of course, if they're even on social media (or can afford to be).
Although I am wondering how long before someone says people like that shouldn't even be allowed to vote...

Keep Rolling OnFBI's Comey opposed naming Russians, citing election timing
The official said some government insiders are perplexed as to why Comey would have election timing concerns with the Russian disclosure but not with the Huma Abedin email discovery disclosure he made Friday.
In the end, the Department of Homeland Security and The Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued the statement on Oct. 7, saying "The U.S. intelligence community is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of emails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations…These thefts and disclosures are intended to interfere with the US election process."
This fucking guy.
His ass better be writing his resignation letter tonight.

Keep Rolling OnComey argued privately
privately
There you go. Before I check the article for the source of this, I'll just say if it isn't multiple sources independently confirming it, it's not reasonable to believe it at this point. If there's some sort of evidence, other than one witness, I'll believe it. (And, needless to say, it'll make my already poor opinion of Comey even worse.)
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.Turns out that the FBI absolutely were sitting on evidence that Russia is directly supporting Trump,
but Comey refused to release it because of the Hatch Act. He even went so far as to demand that the FBI be removed from that statement that was made a few weeks ago about it. This goes beyond being just kind of oblivious, this is blatantly partisan, and it could ruin the FBI's reputation of being neutral in politics and being relatively well run.
EDIT: Very much

You have to keep in mind that not everyone has the time or care to as invested in politics and candidate research as we are, especially when their social circles are spouting "Both candidates are bad!" or only supporting one party.
This isn't active malice, it's ignorance.
