Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think part of the deal is that we haven't had very many true supporters that weren't awful. I've only encountered two Trump supporters, both in this thread. One of them was criminally indifferent to Trump's persecution of minorities, and the other was, well, Kyotor. If anyone else has a good reason to support Trump, they can feel free to express those reasons.
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youI think you're confusing being "wrong" with being awful. I can't think of any good reasons to support Trump that work under logic, but that doesn't mean people who fall for it are being actively malicious.
Like Gilphon said, a lot of these people have been duped. And like you said, a lot of them are just awful people. You can debate about the ratio of which group has more in it, but you can't just say the first group doesn't exist and that they're all unilaterally terrible people. Well, you can, but you'd be wrong.
I'm not saying they don't exist. I'm saying they need to actually be in the first group. Meaning they have some reason to be a Trump supporter. Even if it's "I rolled dice". I mean, that would fall under "criminally indifferent", but "apathy" really isn't the most villainous of crimes, yknow?
oops. em. New Topic: Police forces have opened fire on the Native protestors with rubber bullets and bean bags. I'm seeing NONE of this get reported on popular media. If it weren't for facebook, I would never even had heard about this.

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for you"I Feel Forgotten." A Decade of Struggle in Rural Ohio
from The New Yorker
The part of note:
It's an issue that the Democrats need to address. And/or the Republicans need to address the needs of everyone else. Either way, we need a party that recognizes the needs of everyone.
We've been over this. If the "disadvantaged white voters" weren't so busy voting for Republicans who promise to stick it to the brown people, but refuse to do even the slightest bit to help the people who are their constituents, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Yes, they have a long list of grievances, many of them with merit. But the idea that cutting welfare for blacks, or deporting Mexicans, or cutting taxes on the rich would help them at all is absurd.

Sorry, but I'm losing more and more patience for the working white class. I mean, the claim of helping immigrants and minorities falls flat on its face due to the pipeline protest.
And of course, the things that would help the working white class, they actively vote against.

To Ulfric Stormcloak, there are two kinds of people in this world: Nords, and the folks beneath them.

juuuusssttt maayybbee
the republican white working class feeling forgotten and the republicans voting for the pipelines
aren't necessarily the same people since the Republican party is just as diverse as the Democratic party??
shocking i know
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeWorking class white people are hardly the only lower class people who like to hold others down to feel better, so it's hard for me to react more harshly than with other similar situations. I still hate it, but not more so.
Except no it isn't. That's easily verifiable.

Weld just called out Comey. And I will give the Libertarians some respect for calling out Trump. They are more reasonable than the Greens on that front.

As Fighteer said, a lot of rural white voters have some legitimate grievances. Being poor is being poor. Left behind by globalization is left behind by globalization. But these people keep voting for Republicans and have for a long time, who simply direct their anger at "the Democrats just help brown people and immigrants and leave us behind", with the added dose of "those people" having it better than us hard-working, salt of the earth (white) folks.
Also it's like this: We've had civil rights activists pointing out that the system is indeed rigged towards the elite. For like fucking decades now.
And the working white class, who would deny that claim in the past, now believe the system is rigged against them because a rich and extremely selfish conman is telling them that so he can win the Presidency.

Kyotor's post history has a string of posts in LGBT thread, the last of which is thumped. But the thing about that, at least to me, is that that was six months ago, with only one post between then and now.
But, well, I guess this isn't a hill I'm willing to die on, so I won't say any more.
