The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Frankly, there's probably a mountain of "locker room talk" tapes lying around in various places. And I don't mean some horrible thing he secretly said in private, I mean in the sense that like 90% of what Trump says is either nonsense or extremely offensive. If the other Republicans had actually cared during the primaries I'm pretty sure they could have sunk him based on his misogyny alone.

I know that old people aren't very tech-savvy, but can politicians please stop using private email servers?

That will happen just as soon as the government stops using technology that would have been considered obsolete garbage in the 90's.

I'm not sure if now would be the time to drop any final bombs on Trump. News cycles are fast in the modern era and it might be best to drop anything on say the Saturday before the election. Get the news talking about it for the weekend and the papers writing about it for Monday so that it's fresh in everyone's mind for Tuesday.

"At times, Trump seemed to make light of others’ expectations about his generosity.

In 1997, for instance, he was “principal for a day” at a public school in an impoverished area of the Bronx. The chess team was holding a bake sale, Hot & Crusty danishes and croissants. They were $5,000 short of what they needed to travel to a tournament.

Trump had brought something to wow them.

“He handed them a fake million-dollar bill,” said David Mac Enulty, a teacher and the chess team’s coach.

The team’s parent volunteers were thrilled.

Then disappointment.

Trump then gave them $200 in real money and drove away in a limousine.

Why just $200?

“I have no idea,” Mac Enulty said. “He was about the most clueless person I’ve ever seen in that regard.”

Wow he is cheaper than Mr. Krabs.

That really doesn't surprise me. Angelus Nox and I have already mentioned how we have our own version of Trump down here, who honestly I find more frightening mostly because he seems to have a consistent ideology - a terrible one.

From that going onto the actual Trump isn't much of a stretch.

Well, I'm not exactly surprised. I don't see why try to support a political candidate in another country like this, but I can see people doing it. But still, words fail me.

A number of scientific studies have raised red flags about possible health effects of Wi Fi radiation on young children. I do not have a personal opinion that Wi Fi is or isn't a health issue for children. There is not enough information to know. I do however believe in science. Scientific research should go forward and find out. Countries including Switzerland, Italy, France, Austria, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Israel, Russia and China, have banned or restricted these technologies in schools. These concerns were ignited by a recent National Institutes of Health study that provided some of the strongest evidence to date that exposure to radiation from cell phones and wireless devices is associated with the formation of rare cancers. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/major-cell-phone-radiation-study-reignites-cancer-questions/ If we believe in science, which i think most Redditors do, let's follow the science where it takes us.

[up][up][up] Looking at 538's list of national polls the polls range from basically tied to one oddball poll that has her up a ludicrous 14 points.

One important thing to note is that if you look at the polling averages, Hillary's percentage of the popular vote hasn't actually changed all that much in the last couple weeks. What has changed is that Gary Johnson's support has started to falter and Trump seems to have picked up a point from there.

"Right, so, how accurate are those claims?"

They aren't. Wifi is just the newest in a long tradition of "new thing gives you cancer" that dates back to at least microwaves. It's closely associated with general anxiety about radiation and Electromagnetic hypersensitivity disorder. The key point is that if people were adversely effected by electromagnetic signals they would be very dead since, as you may notice, electromagnetic signals are also known as radio waves, AKA those things blanketing every single town since the 1920s.

As long has Clinton can secure every blue state (seems likely, though Nevada could be a problem) and wins 2-3 battleground states (or one of the big ones like Ohio or Florida), the national polls shouldn't matter.

Since when is Nevada not a battle ground state? But for whatever it means, 538 has Arizona and Ohio lean-Trump for the first time in awhile.

Well, Arizona always seemed to be on the edge even as it's been leaning more towards Clinton, and Ohio struck me as the most red-leaning of the major battleground states. Hopefully, things will turn around by Election Day. We can certainly manage without them, but I'd prefer we get as much as we can.

Regarding 538's list of options, I have to note that the idea of dropping a bomb on Trump is a ridiculous one even if Hillary has a bomb. First off, Trump is teflon-coated with his base, and second, nothing Hillary can say will be more damaging to Trump with everyone else than Trump himself.

Yeah, unless the dirt Clinton has on Trump is a bomb on the level of Castle Bravo, it won't have an impact. If the fact that Trump admitted to committing sexual assault on a regular basis won't ground him, few things will.
