Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So...you all were saying?
New Survey coming this weekend! Is the political ill-will towards evolution still that bad? I get the impression most millennials these days believe in it or at least passively trust it to be correct.
I don't exactly have any data to corroborate that, although it's been noted that evangelical groups have become less gradually less influential over time, which I think will create a more positive environment for evolution to be taught and accepted.

More people believe in evolution than ever before, but not enough for me to be satisfied with America's scientific literacy. And we have elected officials on House science and technology committees who don't believe in (or pretend not to believe in) climate change, so I'm sure my bitterness is understandable.

That's right, boys. Mondo cool.Fox put your pitchfork away on the FBI director, he's actually being reasonable. Yes he wouldn't normally constantly update Congress on the menial details of an investigation, but Congress has demanded that he do so, that's Congress' right and he has to follow though. His note is pretty basic, there's a thing and he's gonna look into it.
The fact that Congress are nutty partisan hacks is neither the FBI directors fault or his responsability. He's not being partisan he's doing his job, which sadly requires him to report to a bunch of partisan nutjobs.
He'd be at risk of being held in contempt of Congress if he didn't report this.
Use your pitchfork on the press, who are hyping this up as if it's a thing when it's really just the FBI going "I guess we'd better check under that rock to? yeah I guess so."

It does matter for the FBI, which is his primary concern. The GOP has gone to the well far too many times on the emails for it to be particularly effective. The news organizations have nothing else to talk about right now vis a vis the election. Trump himself hasn't done anything notably outrageous since the rigged comments.
