Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Day 1 in office headline: "Hillary Clinton announces a compromise on email matters. Because her use of email is such a sensitive issue to them, all correspondence with Republicans will now be performed using carrier pigeon."
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.No. There is literally nothing of substance anywhere in this. They're just desperate for a scandal because of everything surrounding Trump right now.

Oh, I wouldn't say that. The GOP's primary angle of attack on Clinton has always been to make mountains out of molehills and this may be no exception. What's ultimately important about this isn't whether or not there is any validity to the claim. It's how hard the GOP will milk it.
Frankly, it says a lot about Clinton that in the final hour, when the GOP is most desperate to find whatever dirt they can stick on her, their ultimate play was just revisiting the email scandal for the umpteenth time.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. What's actually important about this is the fact that the FBI director, James Comery, thought it was acceptable to pull this sort of shit. What launched the whole story was a letter that he sent to Congress this afternoon, which reads (in its entirety):
In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation. I am writing to inform you that the investigative team briefed me on this yesterday, and I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation.
Although the FBI cannot yet assess whether or not this material may be significant, and I cannot predict how long it will take to complete this additional work, I believe it is important to update your Committees about our efforts in light of my previous testimony.
That's literally it. There's nothing there. "We found more emails. Will look into them and get back to you. Cannot say when more information will be available." This dropped on a Friday afternoon (when people are likely to hear about it, but much less likely to hear about any clarifications or additional information that comes out over the weekend), less than two weeks before election day, while early voting is currently going on in most states.
It's a fantastically blatant attempt to manufacture an October surprise, coming from a nominally nonpartisan position.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Plus, there's honestly not all that many undecided voters left. Trump supporters will eat this up, but you still only get one vote per person no matter how hard you vote for them, and Clinton supporters will largely dismiss it — rightfully — as bullshit.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. My understanding is that while going though Weiner's emails the FBI found a few connected to Clinton (maybe sent from him to her, her to him or between him and his wife about her), they're going to look at said emails to see if there's anything in them.
That's it, for all we know Weiner once emailed Clinton asking if she knew when his wife would be home and she emailed back saying around 9.
Now I'm not ready to jump of the pitchfork wagon for the FBI director yet, it's possible that he's simply doing everything by the book and that that means keeping congress up to date.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAlso, I think it's mentioned already, but a group called the Democratic Coalition Against Trump is filling a complaint with the Department of Justice over this
The actual complaint from DCAT themselves:

Anyone wanna bet the Hillary administration will just stop using emails for anything? All communications would be via self-destroying notes.
