The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

WTF? Trump has such an overblown sense of entitlement, he thinks he should just be handed the Presidency? Yeah, just like he's been given everything else in his life on a silver platter, garnished with $100 bills... What a fucking asshole.

One poll had him ahead, but within the margin of error. Clinton is still doing well in enough states, no reasonable projection has Trump anywhere near 270.

To be fair, its been reported he was joking.

But thats a bad joke.

Donald Trump is only joking if what he said makes him look bad. Otherwise, he is completely serious.

One of Trump's planes skidded on a wet runway during landing, while Pence was on board. No injuries were reported.

@the militia thing: I'm wondering if the removed juror didn't bring up The-Legal-Issue-That-Shalt-Not-Be-Named and after he was kicked they decided to go with it.

It's a bit unfortunate; with a felony conviction they coulda taken away their guns. With one of their co-conspirators being very dead though I don't expect them to try their luck again.

On the other hand, wasn't one of their explicit goals to be declared terrorists so they could point and say "Look, police state!"?

Yes, which is why we were careful to take them in alive and put them to fair trial. Most of them, at least.

Many Trump supporters, including my Mom, have family members who have served in the Military. They feel like their families have bled and died and believed for this country. They have lived the "traditional", American lifestyle, suppressing various personal desires to conform and "put the nation first." Then in the middle or tail end of their lives they feel like they are being told that the jokes on them and nothing they or their ancestors did mattered, or worse it was evil, and they watch the country they love "be handed over to", immigrants, who they view as free loaders who haven't sacrificed anything and won't assimilate, and Blacks, who they will make up excuses as to why they don't count as real Americans and haven't sacrificed anything, and who they view as by their mere existence an act of subversion against the national identity.
As someone in the military, this angers me so much because even the military isn't majority whitenote .
In short America's mistake on racism was that we didn't have enough time to destroy and assimilate the populations we brutalized, and thus the ugly truth is out their for us and the rest of the world to see.
We destroyed a lot of them, and refused to assimilate the ones we didn't.
since America doesn't hold a new election just because the government can't agree, we get deadlock. However, that forces Congresscritters from both sides and multiple political inclinations to work together instead of throwing up their hands and calling a new election. We ultimately even get budgets, because a truculent Congress knows what'll happen to their party if the government shuts down
Yeah, and we had how many shutdowns under Bill and Barack? 5 IIRC? That's some real compromising from Congress alright.

I mean, there's something to be said for Parliamentary democracy because if deadlock like right now was a feature of one, the resulting election would capture the public's dissatisfaction with the government's action immediately, rather than letting them forget. The UK recently did away with snap elections — terms are fixed at five years unless there's literally chaos in the Commons — and that's probably a mistake. No one remembers the policies of 2011 in time for an election in 2015, for example.

As someone in the military, this angers me so much because even the military isn't majority whitenote unless you're talking about officers specifically, because officers are ~90% white men, while the overall numbers have white men as ~1/3 IIRC.

That's f'd up, man. What's this "Put a n***er behind the trigger" bullshit?

[up][up][up][up] And that makes almost all films and games involving the U.S. Military in the modern day wrong, as they usually show the military being primarily white.

Which makes movies living in the Sci-Fi Ghetto like Battleship and Battle: Los Angeles more realistic than their realistic counterparts; non-white characters comprise a good chunk of both major and minor characters in those films.

@Handle: Military enlistment is disproportionately represented by the lower income brackets (enticed by recruitment bonuses and paid education) which happens to include a lot of black people. Commissioned officers on the other hand are more likely to come from money and attend military academies like West Point.

In a nutshell, it's racial inequality as a side-effect of economic equality in this case.

Basically, to sum up the video for those who didn't see it. Democrat Tammy Duckworth is running against Republican Senator Kirk for the Illinois Senate seat, and Duckworth talked briefly about her time in service and how families like hers who've served for generations are often the first to bleed in costly wars so we should be mindful of what conflicts we engage in.

Kirk's response? "I forgot your family came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington."
