The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The thing about Bernouts that baffles me is that they flat out ignore Bernie's advice. You trusted that he knew what was best for the country. Now when he tells you don't vote for Stein you don't trust him?

One of the reasons I am worried is because almost all the talk has been a reaction or discussion about Trump. Just like it was about Obama before the Election in 2008. In 2012 it was less volatile from what I saw. Not only is this a very contested election but much worse, the candidate everyone is talking about is Trump.

[up]It's not a very contested election. Barring something major he has almost no chance of winning.

Your point about talking about Trump might be bad if people were saying good things about him, but that's not the case, for the most part. It keeps happening because Trump keeps saying/doing stupid and horrible things.

Hold up. According to that article Stein inherited money from her for family. That would imply she's old money. Didn't Hillary make her fortune herself? Stein has the nerve to act like Hillary's some trust fund baby plutocrat?

I haven't been seriously worried. While there was a close call or two, ever since Trump became the nominee this became Clinton's election to lose. Trump has spent too much time alienating potential voters, both outside of and within his own party. Trump's candidacy has also turned several states that should've been safe Republican votes into toss-ups that could go either way. I also see his recent whining about rigged elections to be due to knowing he's going to lose and trying to Sour Grapes it.

People have been calling Trump the death knell of the Republican Party or similar. I don't completely agree that's the case, but he's done them a lot of harm and (with any luck) weakened the hold of the crazy element even a little.

[up][up][up] Stein also had the gall to criticize HRC for her ties to Goldman Sachs, when one of the funds she invested in maintains a significant position in Goldman Sachs bonds.

I think the big thing with Clinton is that the appearance of impropriety can sometimes be just as (if not more) damaging than actually doing it. Basically Then Let Me Be Evil without actually turning bad, and it's certainly not helped by the whole "DNC colluding with Clinton to win the primary" allegation which has kept the "Bernie or Bust" crowd from supporting Clinton over Trump.

And I'm taking advantage of this page-topper and re-linking the "Donald Trump as BP Richfield compilation from earlier. Enjoy!

People not care about Sanders message because part of his charm was he was anti-goverment, now he "sell out" or was threated to comply.

And in part the whole "both side are bad" is because most of the times ether they are or a least leave a lot to desire, this election is weird because well...Trump is batshit insane

Both are gaining ground as undecideds and third parties fade, but Hillary's maintaining a 6-point lead nationally. The race may have tightened, but not by a significant amount.

I will say, even if the scandals are manufactured, and you're aware of it, I get why that would still drain people of enthusiasm.

She's just not the most charismatic person, and whether you think that should matter or lot or not, if you can't naturally rile people up I get why a lot would go "what's the point". I don't agree, obviously, but I get it.

Actually the sellout accusations come mostly from the Alt-Right. They've very poorly-worded, too.

Did early voting today. Voted Democrat across the board (not that difficult; my U.S. Rep, Seth Moulton, is running unopposed). On the ballot questions, I voted no on the expansion of gambling in Massachusetts, no on lifting the cap on charter schools, yes on the farm animal welfare bill, and yes on pot legalization.

I wonder why Hillary hasn't become a more charismatic campaigner over the years.

I heard that someone destroyed Trump's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That's not cool, even though it's Trump's. Isn't that destroying public property?
