The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm knowledgable enough to say that the idea of a "most prejudice" is silly, prejudice comes in to many shapes and sizes to try and catagolouge it on a least to most scale.

The idea of a "most prejudiced country" is a false notion in general, largely due to the fact that people are people no matter where you go. The idea that Europeans, Americans, and any others are somehow different at their core is laughable at best. Every country has a solid population that is racist and prejudiced. Every country has a sizeable population that is more open-minded and pushing for more rights. Every country is full of people that have a sense of superiority because they're not __.

Yes, there are distinct cultural differences between regions due to our histories, and yes it does have impacts on our thoughts and the way we see things.

But just look at history, man. Even dick jokes have been around since before the Romans, what makes you think that populations are suddenly different from each other in regards to something as complex as racism and prejudice simply because they're separated by a big lake?

Jack, that was a long, rambly post with no point except to pound home your usual negativity. "Most racist" is a useless distinction, plus Canada's reputation has done nothing to stop them from treating First Nations people with extreme prejudice. Trying to rank sins is, in the end, a useless endeavor that takes up energy that could be used more productively.

Plus, you keep misspelling "border" because "boarder" is a person, not a thing.

I think this discussion hasn't veered off topic so much as just driven into an incredibly vague fog in which we aren't even talking about specific things so much as generalities which are not true.

Can I nominate daddy Spain for the most racist nation ever? Surely killing 90% of the population of a whole continent counts for something, right?

Anyway, as a foreigner I don't think the US is worse than other countries when it comes to race issues, it's just that they're the most visible. Between movies, music, theatre and its huge news networks and elections that are covered everywhere, the rest of the world hears constantly about (almost) everything that happens in your country. It also helps that it's one of the most populated countries in the world AND that english is one of the most popular languages around the world.

I believe that, short of the Vatican, any other country would be seen as THE WORSE if the spotlight was on it 24/7/365.

North Korea is very probably the most racist country in the world today. That said, something like this is next to impossible to measure properly, and even if you did you'd still need to carry out the same research in every country, which is not feasible. What you'll end up doing is gathering existing studies from as many countries as you can, but the studies will differ on their methodologies so in the end you'll not have anything very conclusive.

And anyway, this is quite off-topic.

If I were to go out on a limb, my guess would be that racial issues are more publicly pronounced in the USA primarily due to our ethnic diversity. Most other countries in the world are far more ethnically homogeneous than the United States, with minorities making up, well, an extreme minority of their populations, while the US is slowly moving in the direction of its dominant racial group, whites, becoming merely the largest minority.

This leads to racial divides being more heavily publicized, because minority populations here are simply larger and thus more able to make their voices heard in politics and pop culture than minorities in other countries, and also drives racial paranoia among the dominant race higher, leading to more lashing out against minorities, because they're simply confronted with minorities or their influence more often.

By comparison, a minority ethnic population in another country is likely too small to have any political or cultural power to make their voices heard, and fewer members of the dominant racial group feel that privilege threatened.

Okay, can someone more well verse in US history break this down for me: What is it about racism in the USA that it's so powerful that there are tens of millions willing to potentially burn down the entire republic (and by proxy the entire Free World), just for the CHANCE to screw ethnic minorities over?

Some of it is universal or nearly so, and some of it is special to the country. For the more general stuff, humanity (and indeed most creatures) love to group and categorize things. It helps you survive if you only need to learn once that the lion can eat you or that some snakes are venomous.

The more specific things include the fact that the US was being populated and then founded right when a bunch of pseudosciences were popular to declare non-white people were subhuman or literally created by God to be their slaves in one way or another. Some of it these theories were incredibly precise... they could count practically every country as a separate race. But the thing they all agreed on were that Africans and Native Americans were beneath them, and the US and its founders adopted these ideas wholeheartedly. There's a semi-famous quote from Ben Franklin complaining about how the US was going to be overrun by those swarthy savages the Germans that has become popular to bring up in recent years to show how xenophobia has been a part of the US makeup forever.

"Those who come hither are generally of the most ignorant Stupid Sort of their own Nation…and as few of the English understand the German Language, and so cannot address them either from the Press or Pulpit, ’tis almost impossible to remove any prejudices they once entertain…Not being used to Liberty, they know not how to make a modest use of it…I remember when they modestly declined intermeddling in our Elections, but now they come in droves, and carry all before them, except in one or two Counties...In short unless the stream of their importation could be turned from this to other colonies, as you very judiciously propose, they will soon so out number us, that all the advantages we have will not in My Opinion be able to preserve our language, and even our Government will become precarious."

[W]hy should the Palatine Boors be suffered to swarm into our Settlements, and by herding together establish their Language and Manners to the Exclusion of ours? Why should Pennsylvania, founded by the English, become a Colony of Aliens, who will shortly be so numerous as to Germanize us instead of our Anglifying them, and will never adopt our Language or Customs, any more than they can acquire our Complexion.

Which leads me to add one Remark: That the Number of purely white People in the World is proportionably very small. All Africa is black or tawny. Asia chiefly tawny. America (exclusive of the new Comers) wholly so. And in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally of what we call a swarthy Complexion; as are the Germans also, the Saxons only excepted, who with the English, make the principal Body of White People on the Face of the Earth. I could wish their Numbers were increased. And while we are, as I may call it, Scouring our Planet, by clearing America of Woods, and so making this Side of our Globe reflect a brighter Light to the Eyes of Inhabitants in Mars or Venus, why should we in the Sight of Superior Beings, darken its People? why increase the Sons of Africa, by Planting them in America, where we have so fair an Opportunity, by excluding all Blacks and Tawneys, of increasing the lovely White and Red? But perhaps I am partial to the Complexion of my Country, for such Kind of Partiality is natural to Mankind.

(To get a fuller sense of the racial philosophy of the times, feel free to read up on things like Scientific racism, and you can investigate other pseudosciences like phrenology, which tried to classify people by appearance, etc.)

Also, just prior to the Civil War, many slave states had slave populations that were nearly equal or even greater than their white populations. (Alabama and South Carolina actually had more slaves than white people, see here.) The white populations of these states were deathly afraid of slave uprisings and the prospect of being paid back for their treatment of blacks, but their only solution was further, more brutal repression. They felt they were riding a tiger, but they couldn't get off without either getting mauled or losing the one advantage they had, slave labor.

After losing the war none of that resentment went away, and as soon as the North gave up on Reconstruction, it was up to good Southerners and bigots from all over the country to put those minorities back in their place. Pushing down blacks and other minorities became a way of thumbing your nose at the North, who only occasionally cared anyway and did plenty of pushing down minorities themselves, usually just more subtly and less brutally. That attitude has been passed along in different ways, and often mixed with some twisted religions, (not for nothing do a lot of racial hatred come from "religious schools" like Bob Jones University, Liberty University, etc.) and when you combine it all you get an idea of why it all has such an influence, and continues to do so.
