Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Telegraph did a bit of investigative journalism, old school. Here's the report
.
They had their journalist pretend that they're representing a wealthy Chinese person who'd like the give a PAC supporting Trump $2 million in exchange for some influence with the future Trump government.
The PAC's leaders were very willing to agree to this arrangement, and they even offered to help channel the money so that there wouldn't be a direct illegal donation to the PAC. (Foreign donations are apparently illegal.) The Trump PAC people offered to accept the money to their own accounts and then donate it to the PAC in their own name (or their companies' names) to hide the Chinese donor. They promised the donor could have the PAC people "whisper into Trump's ear" at any point and that the donation would be "remembered" by the Trump government.
I suppose I must point out that PACs supporting Trump might not be taking instructions from the Trump campaign, so while this clearly proves that this particular PAC is doing illegal things and promising access to Trump, it's not necessarily the case that Trump knows about this or condones it.
The reporters also tried to make a similar offer to a pro-Clinton PAC but didn't get a response.
I wonder if this will even register as a scandal, at this point.

Yeah, that was posted earlier today. They're a British paper though so I'm not sure just how well the US media will get wind of it.
Re: the GOP: Another important difference is that they still had at least the outward appearance of a united front in backing Romney, even as the Tea Party fractures were showing. This year it's open animosity and the fractures are splitting.
They're the organizational and administrative body as well as where a lot of the campaign planning traditionally happens, including where to spend campaign money (beyond what a candidate for office raises themselves). They publish the party platform which is supposed to represent the broad consensus of party goals. They have no role that is legally binding but they wield and shepherd influence as well as grunt work. Same with the DNC.

I dunno if anyone's mentioned it, but #Trump A Horror Movie is trending right now. Essentially a bunch of horror movie parodies with Trump inserted.
There's not knowing or condoning and then there's "not knowing or condoning". While I do believe Trump doesn't know mostly because he doesn't care enough to keep tabs on what his campaign or PACs are doing , it's also possible he's engaging in a bit of "See no evil, hear no evil" to keep his hands officially clean.
To use an actual president as an example; near the end of the Civil War Abraham Lincoln privately implied to his senior military leaders that he wanted them to let the Confederate leadership flee the country. He never actually said those words and officially the rebels were to be captured and brought to trial, but Lincoln managed to get his intentions felt without actually implicating himself and thus avoid an uproar in the Union over this policy.

"You want to go to Canada? I’ll pay for you to go to Canada," Hannity continued. "You want to go to Kenya? I’ll pay for you to go to Kenya. Jakarta, where you went to school back in the day, you can go back there. Anywhere you want to go. I’m gonna—I’ll put the finest food, caviar, champagne, you name it. I have one stipulation: you can’t come back. That’s fair."
Totally not racist!!!

New Survey coming this weekend!Hmm...
How about "Which candidate can be best trusted to protect the rights of LGBT+ college students?"
Oh God! Natural light! Also, anyone has the link with a Pepe the frog dressed as the reaper representing the alt right showing the Republican mascot the gave signaling the death of the Go P?
That piece of work is more fitting for this election than any political charge I've seen yet.

Inter arma enim silent legesTo be fair, it's been speculated that the Santa being white incident was fabricated, maybe for good ratings.
She's fine, definitely the one good thing to come from that shitty excuse for a news channel.

"If you spend all your heart / On something that has died / You are not alive and that can't be a life"Some people are saying that they've seen their votes for Trump move to Hillary, which considering how they explained what the glitch does, makes a bit of sense, but some people are going into conspiracy theory areas about it.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."

If the GOP collapse completely and utterly then it's likely that the dems would split too even unofficially, there is always opposition to something in politics.
