Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Secular Talk? Dude's hate boner for Hillary rivals even the GOP.
Fucker made fun of her for her work on the Children's Defense Fund. From then on he was forever on my shitlist
New Survey coming this weekend!Heh, I must say that after watching a piece on Buchanan County in Virginia, it might be the first time I saw people who are voting for Trump for a reason I find decent - ie feeling abandoned due to being coal miners under an administration that promotes cleaner energies (and fracking). It's a valid criticism that administrations tend to "forget" about the people with obsolete jobs, and they seldom think of proper transitioning towards new activities.
Also I assume that it's where Appeljack comes from. Those accents, damn.

Cute. Wrong, but cute.

Coal mining is a dead profession. There, I said it. Call them neglected, but I've heard stories about the attitude towards work of the Appalachian folks.
@Tactical Fox 88, got a link to that? I just want to see for myself. Also in more bad news for Trump http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/10/24/exclusive-investigation-donald-trump-faces-foreign-donor-fundrai/
To quote someone from Twitter : Make no mistake - this is a Super PAC head telling a (fake) Chinese donor that he's directly buying influence from a Trump administration.
Wow

Coal mining is not only dead, it is stupidly automated now.
You need more engineers and technicians working to keep the digging and drilling equipment functional than you need people to work on the mines. It was labor heavy up until the early 90's but now it is almost pure machine work.
Inter arma enim silent legesI also have a hard time seeing Trump actually giving a shit about the average coal worker anyway - he probably hasn't stepped foot anywhere near a mine or spent more than 5 minutes talking to anyone who works there, unless it was to complain about something.
More importantly, he doesn't respect anything or anyone but himself. It's a bit sad how desperate or wilfully ignorant people are that they don't see that.
For the record, I don't romanticize coal working in Virginia more than I do it in France, where you have a pretty impressive correlation between (former) coal regions, unemployment rate and Front National vote overall.
The people interviewed in the segment didn't really seem that enthusiased by Trump. It's just that most of them thought he was more likely to help them get a job back.
As for saying that coal mining is dead, sure it's true, but how smart is it to blame it on the coal miners themselves? They aren't the ones responsible for the evolution of technology and the rise of new energies. They just point out that Obama favoring cleaner energies (and fracking) ruined their home towns, and that Clinton will do the same, while there is a chance Trump might help them.
Everyone would take "slight chance" over "no chance". Again, the issue here is just that it is right to point out that the shift towards new energies was done without caring one bit about the future of coal miners. We got the same thing in France when we transitioned from coal to nuclear, but that was a few decades ago - and to this day you can still see the social consequences in North and Lorraine.
And I'm not advocating for a Trump vote either. It was just nice to see some people who would reasonably vote Trump, instead of the hate and bigotry that seemed to be the norm so far.

A lot of folk don't get how big a deal automation is. I live in a city that was built around mining. At the heights of the good ol' days there was 50,000 miners keeping the ore chugging 24/7. Now we produce roughly the same with only 3,000 employees total. That counts IT and engineers and truck drivers and...you get the idea. Who needs 500 guys with pickaxes when you can get one guy with a remote operated super drill?
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?I'm still shocked that people are trying to pass 'clean coal' as 'clean' when it just means they pump the CO 2 underground for it to leak out elsewhere.
So is that why he's advocating Clean Coal? Huh. Also explains those people who put coal grills in their engines to make their cars puff out black smoke in order to say eff you to Obama

"Syria (bad show, Obama, bad show). "
to be fair, Syria was different because Russia decide to move quickly and back Assad, while with Lybia was more "let not try to much, otherwise it will end like Iraq" also, it wasnt England and France the one pushing for military action against Gadafi?
(Also, here in south america there is the idea that Gadaffi should just stay in power since it bring stability and people like him....yeah, is sad....)
