The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Referring again to this post, I gave more details about Joe Arpaio's crimes. He is under federal investigation, and essentially his deputies are anti-Hispanic hit squads. Hell even Amnesty International have gotten involved in condemning the bastard. See this link for Wikipedia's very large list of his controversies

The fact that Phoenixers keep electing the man tells you a lot about their politics - somehow, my ex's family were among the few Black Sheep liberals in the area.

So last night when I was eating dinner with my family, my grandmother brought up that incident about "homeless people disrupting a Trump rally" and how the Democrats had "paid" them.

The gist of it that I remember is that in some batch of the leaked emails there were some campaign people going "wouldn't ti be funny if we went there wearing Planned Parrenthood shirts" and it's been spun from there.

Paul Ryan raises spectre of Bernie Sanders being the Budget Comittee chair if the Dems take the senate. Bernie goes "hey, sounds good" and raises $2m in two days from his followers to help downticket races. Oops. That Burns.

“I think Ryan always had an alternative motive for not getting behind Mr. Trump,” said a poster called Buildthewall 88. “Could he be a secret Muslim, like Obama? He wore a beard at one time, and you know Muslims wear beards. Was he trying to send a message to his backers in the Muslim world?”

Yup. We got Trump supporters who think the Republican Speaker of the House is somehow a secret Muslim.

I'm amazed, if only because that would include acknowledging that Muslims aren't universally brown.

[up] Stupidity of that level being way too prevalent in America is why Trump still has a chance of winning.

[up][up][up]That... long, rambling, incoherent mess of gobbledygook... is unfortunately what passes for "thoughts" in that pumpkin sitting atop Donald Trump's neck. And it came spewing directly out with no filter between his mouth and his brain.

You know, even when/if HRC wins, the worst takeaway the GOP is going to have from this election is that any Republican that wasn't Trump could've beaten Hillary Clinton, and they'll double down on the stupid.

I mean, this is the third election in a row they've lost. They've gotta realize they're doing something wrong.

Unfortunately, they might conclude that the reason they lost this time was because Trump bragged about committing sexual assault.

Which, don't get me wrong, 'Presidential Candidates shouldn't be sex offenders' is not a position I'd challenge, but it's also not the reason Trump's losing. He's losing because of the stuff that comes out of his mouth every time he appears in public.

But, of course, what the GOP really should realize is that Trump became their nominee for a reason- his ability to play a crowd and gather a base was the only thing any of the people they considered had going for them.

[up][up] If that's the only thing they take away from this cycle, then they may very well lose in 2020 as well.

While I think someone already brought it up in this thread, HRC is NOT a weak candidate.

Paul Krugman explains why in this NY Times article.

For those who can't read past the paywall, he basically says that the whole idea that HRC is a weak candidate is horseshit. She's just strong in ways the relatively shallow political pundits these days don't recognize.

He also points out that the other GOP candidates like Marco Rubio collapsed when needled by the childish and bufoonish Trump — Trump is far from the only thin-skinned conservative.

Let's keep it real, and 100. Saying Hillary is a weak candidate is just for those on the far left and far right to rationalize why they lost to "that bitch" and not take responsibility for how shitty their candidates for President were.

I don't even think the sexual assault tape was the decisive factor is this campaign, it was Trump's dismal debate performance that will likely give Clinton a comfortable victory.

[up]Maybe, but if Trump's dismal performance was the main beatdown, than the sexual assault tape was still the knockout punch.

I mean, in fact he was losing the election all along- the debates just made it clear he wasn't going to turn things around and put the possibility of a landslide on the table. He really shouldn't have been able to even win the primaries, let alone win over enough Democrat voters to win the election.

The Sexual Assault tape, though, is why we're seriously considering the idea that he might lose in Utah, and why the GOP gave up on him.
