The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] The Young Turks' Hero Worship of people like Jill Stein and Julian Assange, along with the whole "genocide denial" thing, makes it really hard to like or support them sometimes.

Still, I do enjoy the Loser Donald segments.

And one question specifically asked if Russia used the same justification for Ukraine to invade Estonia, a relatively recent NATO addition. Jill dodged the question and then made the argument that NATO needs to be dissolved.

I am really curious about what we'd find if we dug into Stein's emails. At times I wonder if she's also one of Putin's puppets.

Who she gave that interview to?

People like Jill Stein and Gary Johnson are why most people do not take third parties in America seriously. Their platforms are a joke and so are they.

The scary thing? The other third parties in America are even worse.

At times I wonder if she's also one of Putin's puppets.

Come on, no need to go all conspiracy theorist here. It's not as if it's so implausible that there are fairly large segments of the electorate who are either unsatisfied with either of the major parties or mostly interested in stuff neither party cares about. Those people would naturally drift towards third parties, and the most interesting people from there would have a pretty good chance float to the top of their ticket.

Not everything that's less than 100% anti-Trump has to be Russia's doing. You've got a population of well over 300 million. Isn't it natural that there'd be fairly wacky candidates and parties that would get enough support to be noticed, with such a large population?

If anything, I'm surprised there aren't more very popular third options. I suppose that's just the FPTP system for you.

[up][up] The thing about "big-tent" parties is that there's room for a lot of different people in the same party in theory.

In America, third parties are basically the people too extreme or crazy to have a place in the big-tent parties. This time around though, the Libertarians have gotten some traction since the GOP's tent has shrunk and been divided thanks to Trump. Though TBF to Trump (never thought I'd type that...) the GOP has been becoming more exclusive and extreme years before he became their nominee.

That said, I don't think Stein's a Putin puppet. She's something worse — a Putin apologist. And as I said before, her running mate is even crazier. Stein is the saner one.

I wish the Green Party was a more viable alternative more akin to the European Green Parties.

So...let me get this straight.

1) We have an authoritarian fascist as a major party candidate for the most powerful man in the world.

2) We have the most well qualified candidate in a number of decades running, who happens to be, female, experienced, and a progressive.

3) Ample evidence of a foreign power trying to interfere with our elections.

4) Ample evidence of said foreign power having two supposed leaker organizations on their payroll, to further the plans in point # 3

5) Said authoritarian fascist having an admiration of said foreign power who's currently running a dictatorship disguised as a democracy.

6) Because the female candidate is untrusted because of the smear campaign of right-wing of our own country, lots of far left liberals distrust her.

7)Because of that distrust they go to the most "popular" third-party Party's nominee for President.

8)That third parties nominee has been seen at a rival foreign powers state-controlled media dinner, and is consistently saying and promoting a foreign policy that benefits said foreign rival.

9)Said third party candidate complains about a system that's rig but gladly joins the Russian President whom it's almost certainly rigged the system in his favor, for dinner.

10)Has now said she wants to basically let the USA's nuclear infrastructure to go to waste, all the while the Kremlin rebuilds it's military lost from it's communist days.

Yet, somehow Clinton is the corrupt and "evil" one?

How in the absolute fuck is this not a big deal?!

When I come to think about it, Trumps praise of Putin and his bashing of Hillary for dealing with Saudi Arabia when it came to LGBT+ rights is sheer hypocrisy. Putin's green lit nearly every homophobic law the Russian Lawmakers proposed and Russia, outside maybe Saint Petersburg isn't a friendly place for the LGBT+ crowd.

So is Stein and Trump, she's a Green and Putin profits massively from the Oil trade and Russia under him has a shitty track record when it comes to environmentalism, not to mention human rights.

Libertarians love boner with Putin is also hypocritical, Putin is a Statist and the State is the strongest institution in Russia, one that you need to be part of officially or extra officially to get anything done.

The mental gymnastics of those people and their supporters is baffling.

[up][up][up][up][up]Fine, then she's Putin's useful idiot apologist. I really don't see how that's any different. Either way she's furthering his interests in the US.

[up][up][up]When you put it like that it becomes kind of funny. This sort of thing seems like an honest to god conspiracy that's actually happening. Instead the dumbasses on the right and left are focusing on faux scandals and blaming Jews for everything.

You know what? If I were American and given the choice, I'd vote for Johnson over Stein. At least he has some experience in politics and doesn't have a running mate who is essentially Alex Jones if he were left wing.

Well, if you guys want some hopium, GOP strategist said on MSNBC that their internals show Trump and Clinton tied in Indiana.

The House is not only in play, but it's looking more likely that's it gone. Gerrymandering the districts is backfiring on the GOP spectacularly.

[up][up] Johnson and the Libertarians are awful too. Johnson's a buffoon, the tax plan is a disaster, outright removing several departments of the government would lead to even more disaster, and they are the pawns of the Koch brothers, who are a disaster unto themselves.

We'd be replacing our parks with oil fields and such.

You bring up another good point. Any third party candidate who somehow got into the White House would have to be able to convince Congress to play ball.

"Clinton far ahead in Electoral College race: Reuters/ipsos poll" - http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN12M0JR

An excerpt:

In the last week, there has been little movement. Clinton leads Donald Trump in most of the states that Trump would need should he have a chance to win the minimum 270 votes needed to win. According to the [latest States of the Nation project], she has a better than 95 percent chance of winning, if the election was held this week. The mostly likely outcome would be 326 votes for Clinton to 212 for Trump.

Johnson has experience...which mostly consists of vetoing everything he didn't agree with (when he was the governor of New Mexico) and refusing to compromise or or discuss anything.
