Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Just had a thought about Utah. Is there any chance that Clinton supporters will vote strategically for Mc Mullin, in an attempt to deny Trump the state's Electoral Votes?
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Just saw the Al Smith dinner. Never watched it before. Are standing ovations normal? I can't figure out, given the seating, whether it's considered part of the etiquette - Clinton got a standing ovation but Trump didn't.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. That tends to cause resentment as a general rule. If a candidate is presented as a shoe-in, sanctioned by all the polls, and over-hyped as such, people are likely to vote otherwise out of sheer bloody-mindedness. See Chirac vs. Balladur in 1995, among many other examples.
Fighteer, try and remain civil towards Sanders' electorate. You're a mod, set an example.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."A lot" is a broad term, but doesn't mean a plurality or a majority, just that a significant number of Sanders supporters were so because they believed the narrative that Clinton is corrupt. Although whether that is what caused them to be Berners or being a Berner caused them to buy into anti-Clinton narratives is the question.
You are correct, if one reads it as a definition of the 'HIAC-dupes-on-the-left'.
But I would counter something else: most people are 'HIAC dupes'. Given the decades-long mediatic propaganda campaign priming them to think that way, can you blame them? I've yet to meet someone who doesn't dislike or mistrust Hillary, even outside leftist and liberal circles. They go out of their way to mention it, as if it was a credit to their intelligence.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." I'll still never get why being a career politician is supposed to be a bad thing"
because she is the establishment and therefore BAAAAAAAAD, unlike trump who is "just" a man, this allow him pausability in his atacks since he is just "concern citizen", he is not a "puppet" of anyone....
yeah is bullshit, but that is how it goes

"They go out of their way to mention it, as if it was a credit to their intelligence."
A lot of leftists do this — they have to preface any criticism of Trump with an equivalent criticism of Hillary, even though they're demonstrably different personalities with different values that are often in direct conflict that makes simultaneous criticism of both candidates an exercise in cognitive dissonance.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."The GOP is giving up.
Specifically, branches of them are going to be running down-ticket ads about checking the power of the White House, which requires the presumption that they've lost the Presidency.
So even they think the actual election is just a formality at this point. Clinton wins, Trump loses, game over.

Might be a tad late for that...

John Oliver put it in perspective by using raisins as a metaphor. HRC is an oatmeal raisin cookie with a couple more raisins than average. Donald Trump has raisins pouring down nonstop onto John's desk.
False Equivalency is bullshit.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI'm going to suggest another reason why people may not like Hillary (not completely my own observation): She talks like a lawyer (yes, duh, she is one). When she's trying to skirt around a sensitive issue she really talks like a lawyer. But even when the actual thing you're saying is reasonable, when you talk like a lawyer it sets off savy people's BS alarms. Hell, people get up in arms when video game companies do it.

Bill Maher said in a recent interview that he thinks it's also because HRC has become a bit guarded and jaded due to decades of scrutiny due to being a woman who refused to Stay in the Kitchen.

Disgusted, but not surprisedWikileaks posts vague warning shot at Kaine, Brazile
.
For God's sake, if they have something to say, then they should just say it. There's less than three weeks left until the election - what's the point of waiting?
Oh God! Natural light!@Rational Insanity: that doesn't make any sense as a strategy when they can go ahead and actually vote for Hillary and actively give her those electorates as well as denying them to Trump. Voting for Mc Mullin in this case is just splitting the vote.

Sanders got a lot of support from the "Hillary is a crook" dupes on the left, who not only believed the Republican propaganda about her but resented the idea that the nomination was a foregone conclusion.
