The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If he wanted to do that he should tell his people not to do their poll watching thing, and say that it is highly unlikely the election will be rigged.

Animorphs: They're coming in illegally. Slugs are pouring in through the mind. We have no humanity if we have no mind. Hillary wants to remove Seerow's Kindness and give the Yeerks our morphing technology. One of my first acts will be to get all of the Yeerk scum, all of the bad ones, we have some bad, bad Vissers in this planet that have to go out. We're going to get them out. We're going to secure the planet. And once the planet is secured, at a later date, we'll make a determination as to the rest. But we have some bad slugs here and we're going to get them out. #Trump Book Report

All of this is just Trump making excuses for what even he thinks is an inevitable loss.

@2000 Election: The issue is that the election probably won't be decided by a single state needing a mandatory recount. All signs point to Hillary having a commanding lead over Trump. Of course Trump and his deplorables think the polls are rigged too.

Uhm

Were the questions supposed to be secret? I assume Clinton simply prepped for the likely topics and thats counted as 'cheating'?

Individual questions are secret but topics are revealed well in advance. Trump is just too stupid to prepare.

The whole spiel about #Trump Book Reports is actually wrong. Trump doesn't read, and he doesn't have the patience to watch a movie all the way through. So his "book reports" would be based entirely on the trailers of the movie version of the book.

[up]x4 It's conspiracy theory bullcrap. Trump thinks that Wallace gave HRC the questions in advance. His only proof? HRC was polite enough to shake Wallace's hand at the end of the debate.

Yes, Trump thinks Wallace — the FOX moderator — was working with HRC against Trump.

Trump is a YUUUGE Sore Loser.

For what it's worth, my understanding is that Brazille told Clinton in advance of a town hall with Sanders to expect a question on the death penalty. This came out in one of the Wikileaks hacks. Definitely kind of bad. Not sure how bad, but I think it underscores the problem with news networks employing "analysts" who are closely tied to current political campaigns.

Trump is being probably deliberately misleading in implying that Clinton received some advance prep for her debates against him.

Speaking of Wallace though, it was kind of funny how Trump obviously thought Wallace was/would be on his side, and so would thank him for questions/comments that seemed to be against Clinton and then would get angry when Wallace started questioning him.

Just saw a clip in the BBC of the debate. Trump surely loves interrupting and talking over people, yeah?

This gif kinds sums how bad Trump lost the debate https://twitter.com/LPDonovan/status/789149583699943424

Also about Gore and Bush, Gore challenged the results after the votes were counted, not 3 weeks before the election. Big difference.

Kinda off-topic - or is it? - but Le Monde published a wonderful piece on gang violence in Honduras and Salvador - the same kind of article that the Guardian did on the "most violent police in the world" in California (albeit shorter).

(in FR obviously - but the pictures are impressive, so it's worth a watch for that only)

An interesting thing is what one Human Rights activist called "the USA's gift". After the Salvadorian Civil War from 79 to 92, 3000 gangsters got transferred back from US prisons to their country of origin...where they became local kingpins. And nowadays, it's the "second generation" that is causing mayhem and explains how Salvador and Honduras tend to top the charts of "most homicides per inhabitant" in the world.

I think I've seen the same problem pointed out with Africa. If I remember correctly it was about the US shortsightedly deporting problematic immigrants back to their home countries where they would use the skills they learned on the US streets to create criminal enterprises.

Yeah, that and some devastating crop failures is part of why there was that flood of unaccompanied minors hitting the US-Mexican border a few years back. It's the kind of situation where the rational option might actually be trekking through Mexico at the mercy of human traffickers, then getting scooped up by US security services, spending years going through the court system, and living for a time with relatives in America before finally getting deported back to Central America.

It'd be nice if we shifted focus from nation-building and fostering democracy in the Middle East to trying to improve things in the hemisphere we claimed in the Monroe Doctrine. At least if we botch things there it won't end with anyone trying to declare a holy war.

The third debate, from the viewpoint of a Trump supporter (my dad): Hillary didn't win. Hillary is awful for being okay with late term abortions even if they're to save a person's life. Hillary supports open borders but Trump doesn't support closed borders. Trump is smart to not accept the outcome if he loses.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to wash away the stupid.

My assumption was that the unsaid part of the "rip the baby out" was that they then killed it, so you c-section the baby then slit its throat. That was at a minimume the dog whistle of it.
