The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So that was fucking incredible, right? Never before and (hopefully) never again shall we see three total shitfests of a debate for the position of leader of the gorram free world. Clinton led trump around by his nose the entire debate and let him dig his own grave. With Chris schooling him on Syria I think Trump is the first person to come third in a two-way debate.

Yeah. I was actually impressed that he managed to hold it in better than before, then Clinton poked fun that Mexico had told him to shove it and he lost it.

And as for anyone that's gone against Mrs. Obama my brother, mother, and father do it a lot, though instead of calling her anything like an idiot (apparently she's an Ivy League grad) they just call her a tranny on the basis that she supposedly has man-hands.

It's funny: of all the idiotic things that Trump said during the debate, his parting shot at Clinton (calling her a "nasty woman") may turn into the resounding battlecry of the Democratic campaign moving into the home stretch. I've read that #ImWithNasty has been trending, which is hilarious.

I haven't seen the clip since the debate but I swear he was so angry he said NO PUPPET like three times before figuring out that isn't a complete sentence. Debate of the year, every year RIP political discourse.

Trump just referred to Middle Eastern countries as countries that "push gays off buildings".

So, is Trump pro-gay? Accepting? I can hardly imagine another Republican candidate bringing that up.

Sort of. After the Orlando nightclub shooting, Trump began reaching out to LGBTs as allies in his crusade against Muslims. He's pro-gay but only in the context of those wicked Muslims and their terrorist ways.

Hatemongers always try to play marginalized groups against each other.

Trump is being controlled through his tie by two young children.

No, he needs to be controlled through his tie by two young children. He's pre-tie Stan.

Maddowblog: Trump's allies are offering the novel excuse that, since Al Gore didn't "immediately concede" in 2000, that it forms a precedent for Trump to refuse to recognize the outcome of this election. Of course, anyone who isn't a complete idiot knows that the reason neither Bush nor Gore could claim victory was because of a mandatory recount in Florida that prevented either candidate from having an Electoral College majority until it was resolved.

Of course, knowing things is hard; it's easier just to say stupid shit that you can count on your base to eat up with a spoon.

From this article:

The right-leaning Fox News said it had been Mr Trump's "strongest debate performance" so far and felt he was "evenly matched" with Clinton. "But Trump may have undone whatever progress he made with a single answer," about the result, which will "undoubtedly be the big headline coming out of the debate and will dog Trump between now and Election Day".

Even readers of Breitbart News, a strong supporter of Mr Trump, thought he had failed to turn things around for himself. In a readers' poll, of 172,550 people who voted, 58% said Mrs Clinton won the debate compared with 41% for Mr Trump.

Yeah, that's right.

Full disclosure, I didn't watch the debate (I've mainly stuck to AARs by catching up on this thread and a couple of 538 articles), but now I'm rather morbidly curious as to what'll happen at tonight's Al Smith dinner.

@Trump talking about gay people: Just like in the wake of Pulse, LGBT people are furious at him. First he tried to turn us against Muslims (another oppressed minority in this country, and there are tons of LGBT Muslims), now he's trying to act like he's the best person for us, even though his platform involves breaking up our families and putting people in conversion camps. Meanwhile, Clinton has plans to actually help us.

Every time Trump tries to appeal to minority voters, it fails horribly.

You know, I wonder if Trump actually believes everything he says in the moment he says it, and then if he contradicts it later, he believes that too.

So it's not that he's intentionally lying, he just believes the truth is whatever he says it is. And that might be a pretty common alt-right thing or whatever, but he might be an extreme example.

Got a notification from Reuters and AP that Donald Trump said "I will totally accept the results of this great and historic presidential election...if I win"

UPDATE: "Trump says he would accept a clear election result but would also reserve the right to file a legal challenge"

Note there aren't any full articles yet as I post. These are literally all the notifications I get are saying.

The article linked in this post on the last page was the BBC headline for pretty much the whole of today, by the way. They're not hiding how scary Trump is, despite their supposed "neutrality" (a discussion of which is offtopic of course).

Another Twitter trend: #TrumpBookReport.

This came from a tweet from a guy called Antonio French, a Democrat candidate for Mayor of St Louis: Trump's foreign policy answers sound like a book report from a teenager who hasn't read the book. "Oh, the grapes! They had so much wrath!"

Examples:

"Juliet. Such a nasty woman. She made Romeo kill himself. And believe me he could have done better. Look at her." #Trump Book Report

The Lannisters. Great family. Strong leaders. Ramsay Bolton said nice things about me. Jon Snow is for open borders. Loser. #Trump Book Report

Honestly, I'm just going to hope that Donald bothers to look at all the negative reception he's getting from refusing to say he'll concede when if he loses the election and instead decide to just accept his possibly inevitable defeat, and he's still got plenty of time before the actual election to do so. But knowing Trump, he could just as easily say he'll concede as paint the dog purple, so who the fuck knows?tongue

The weird thing is, I actually kind of understand what Trump might be getting at with the "clear election result" bit - he's referring to the shitshow of the 2000 election, where it was so close that the Supreme Court stepped in to end the thing. In a case like that, any candidate would be a fool not to contest the results.

However, the way he keeps describing it, coupled with the emphasis about how the election is rigged, throws that particular interpretation into serious doubt.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"
