The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What Ivanka was alledgedly quoted as saying just bugs me me. It seems that she internalized the kinds of reductive and demeaning things that her dad says about women. I dunno.

Like I said it's not THAT uncommon for white women to talk about Po C men in that vulgar, racialized way.

But yes, her dad being who he is probably contributed to that somewhat.

Apparently, it's generally accepted now that when Trump mumbled "nasty woman", it was the moment that he lost the debate.

@Eschaton: About the fact that people want to discuss and teach what consent is, or just the idea that women could consent to sex because they like it? Because either honestly seems possible with him.

Something about how "when a woman doesn't consent, they send the rape police after you".

Nobody's paying attention to him anymore, right?

I got the impression that he, Glenn Beck and a few other super right-wing media personalities have sort of fizzed out as the "conservative" movement has fragmented.

[up][up]Ignoring the fact that "the rape police" are in fact...the police. He seems to have forgotten that rape is illegal.

Outside of the general stupidity (assuming he actually said that), it's also very insensitive to say because of how difficult it is to prosecute and try someone for rape because of general rape culture and the whole "he-said she-said" aspect.

Wait, so Ivanka supposedly said that she's interested in seeing a "mulatto" cock?

Isn't President Obama mixed race?

Hmm...

Edit:

On a more serious note, the stuff brought up about free trade got me wondering: how many of the Trump supporters who blame trade agreements for their woes actually know how said agreements work?

I think that with some people, where Trump faltered when he called Hillary a nasty woman is that he made him look weak because he broke down and called her a base insult. That's just my opinion.

After seeing all three debates I have created an image with text by using Google images and MS Paint that describes my feelings on the matter quite well.

I hope people will get as much of a kick out of seeing it as I did making it.

And seriously, the text basically wrote itself.

@Deadbeat In my opinion, in the 3rd debate, he didn't walk away with any sort of victory. At the most, he was able to pull Hilary down to his level and bring about a tie on a subject. IMHO Hilary actually won several portions by actually answering her questions in an appropriate manner, but a lot of her victories came from the fact that Trump tiraded a lot and set up traps for himself to step in that Hilary was more than happy to spring on him.

Even beyond the Blatant Lies, insults based on gender and race, and all but stating he'll never accept the outcome of the election if he loses; Trump made a fool of himself and let Hilary shine this debate.

When the audience and the debate's time keeper - that last part bears repeating - the frickin' Heaven-blessed Time keeper (bless him for not taking any crap from anyone) laughs at you for saying things so blatantly wrong, you know you hit rock bottom.

Was that intentional on Trump's part or just really bad phrasing?

So after his own running mate, his daughter and his campaign manager have all said (separately) that they'll absolutley accept the election results regardless of who wins, Trump goes and refuses to say whether or not he'll do so as well.

Read between the lines: He still considers it rigged, and is probably furious at having been "betrayed" by the aforementioned trio.

Or he's just trolling the media again to get extra notice for when he does concede... and announces the launch of Trump TV.

Looking back, Clinton's line about the Trump and the Emmy award was a thing of genius. She, and her debate prep team, have Trump's personality mapped out perfectly. They knew exactly how to set him off.

It's ridiculous how obsessed Trump is with the stupid Emmy. Most people don't really care about them, why does he?

Also, he lost the Emmy between 2004 and 2006. It's literally been 10 years. He's still nursing that grudge? Oh yeah, the president should be someone who is still absurdly bitter about something inconsequential that happened a decade ago.

I noticed that. It was pretty unprofessional and not well run. Also, it got launched...on Facebook video. Creating a TV network is really hard, and despite apparently getting media people on board (like Sean Hannity and Steve Bannon), neither of them have any experience running a TV network.

It'll be interesting to see where it goes.

Considering Trump's business experience, it'll go in the trash where it belongs.
