Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't think he was aware of the political ramifications of Kanye's action, and Kanye is a jackass by all accounts, and Kanye is not a demographic of political activists, he is one private citizen acting as such.
Sanders calls certain folks "bigots" and "disgusting" very often.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I mean, whatever legitimate issues there are with Clinton's relatability or connecting with people, actually saying she's not allowed to voice frustrations in less than polite terms, when in private just sounds unreasonable.
That just makes it sound like attacking voting blocks and demographics is okay as long as you disagree with them. Which is, again, something everyone does.

Which of Kanye's actions are you referring too?
Because I believe that Obama was referring to him interrupting Taylor Swift at the MTV music awards.

Oh God! Natural light!Obama's also been frequently candid and impolitic in tone lately (the last two years) due to a lame duck status and finally coming to terms with the protracted campaign of disinformation and slander which has been waged against him from the moment he entered our general awareness, and we laud him for it. Clinton is in a similar situation, and I'm not remotely inclined to hold her feet to the fire for a relatively private and impatient slip-up against political novices who want ideal solutions to everything, such as ourselves at times.

"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once."WTF's a McMullin? Is It Something You Eat??
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Frankly, I'm surprised that the phrase "Get a life" inspired such an angry reaction out of anyone, considering that it's probably one of the mildest things you could say about anybody. Like, if that's your problem with someone, that's an indication there's not many problems to be had.
Regarding the energy stuff; she's come out against the pipeline, and given public pressure is unlikely to switch back. Politicians, as much as people like to complain about flip flopping, do bow to social pressure because doing what the public wants is why they get elected. At least partially. And, as politicians, and president specifically, she and any other candidate would necessarily have to be concerned about what happens to the people employed by certain industries when considering the switch over to cleaner energy. They don't get the luxury of a magic wand that makes that issue go away.
And uh... she's not running on "yes we can" or "hope and change", she's been campaigning on the fact that she's qualified and can continue the work already started. In a lot of ways, her campaign now is a lot more subdued than Obama's 2008 run.
EDIT:
.
Evan McMullin is a former CIA officer who's also worked in the UN refugee agency and as a banker. He's from Utah, and is duly a Mormon. He's been a Republican until he split from the party, basically because they went Trump.

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.Personally, I think that one of the reasons people get so sore at Clinton for calling the alt-right "deplorables" and the alt-left to "get a life" is because, deep down, they know she's exactly right. In a weird way, we're willing to give Trump a pass on things that are so out there because we know that he's blatantly lying, so it sort of washes over us. When a politician delivers an insult that is perfectly accurate, it causes people to get their hackles up and hit back.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"That's exactly my point.
This is a speech from the 2004 convention.
Are you fired up? I know I am. I'm feeling US Patriotism soaring right here in my heart, and I'm not even a US citizen! Also, damn, was that only twelve years ago? This job is killing him!
A humourous retrospective on the 2008 election:

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Apparently, Donald Trump is being endorsed by Barack Obama's half-brother, a Kenyan Muslim named Malik Obama
.
This has to rank somewhere among the strangest political news to come out lately!
If Evan Mc Mullin ends up winning Utah, I really hope that Hillary Clinton congratulates him on doing so in her victory speech...and then never directly acknowledges Donald Trump was running at all.
Partly because I do think an independent candidate winning any electoral votes at all is something that needs to be acknowledged as important, and partly because it would hurt Donald Trump's feelings.
I hope Clinton's acceptance speech won't be much more classy towards Trump than Trump is towards Clinton in his concession speech. Let him set the bar, then see how far above you have to go to remain civil. If he's decent - finally - Clinton should be decent to him. What's the point of kicking him when he's down?
As for Obama's brother, who the hell cares? There's no point being petty about this. Let him have his opinion - he's not even a voter.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.

I mean, surely people are allowed to privately complain and crack jokes about the bullshit parts of their job.
Like, if she'd said that in public, fully aware of the fact the world would know she said that, they'd be something worth talking about here, but she didn't.
