The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]x5 Are you sure? Because all I see on Scope is an article about the mid-June Defcon 3 hoax. There's nothing to suggest anything about another hoax from October.

[up][up]Oh that.

Meh, they've been shooting at us a few days so we shot back. Nothing serious. Nobody has been deployed, no jets scrambled even. Just a few missiles.

It's also worth noting those missiles didn't "fall harmlessly in the water."

They were intercepted and destroyed by the Mason's active defenses. These weren't warning shots

[up]I know, but there's still nothing on it about October other than that the article was apparently updated, despite it still only talking about the mid-June hoax. Do you think you could post up a link, just in case I've got the wrong article?

[up]Okay, that's the same article I was looking at, and there's still nothing about a separate October hoax. Then again, it does say that the Def Con warning site isn't actually run by the US Government, so just because it says we're at Def Con 3 doesn't mean we actually are. (Thank God.) So yeah, it still helps regardless.

False alarm by the looks of it, and a localized DEFCON 3 is hardly the end of the world.

We were in DEFCON 3 after 9/11 if memory serves and we were far closer to DEFCON 2 then so this is fine.

Can they even get away with something like that, even if they retain the Senate?

In theory, there is nothing stopping a Republican-controlled Senate from permanently blocking all Presidential nominations.

60 votes are needed to end a Senate filibuster. For the Democrats to reach that level in this election, a total of 24 out of the 34 races would have to go Democrat (plus 36 Democrat seats not up to get to 60). At the moment, 538's Senate forecast gives the Democrats a median seat total of 51 (polls-only) or 52 (polls-plus); both forecasts put the odds of 60 total Democrat seats at less than 0.1%.

Changing Senate rules to stop filibusters of confirmation votes was on the agenda when Democrats were most recently in control. I wouldn't put it past them to try it again.

That was the "nuclear option" I somewhat recall hearing about some years back, wasn't it?

Ayup. How well it works in practice, should Democrats choose to employ it, will depend on whether the media goes along and continues to blame Republicans for obstructionism, or keeps playing its "both sides have an argument" card, in which case public opinion could be swayed against the move.

You're ruining Facebook and friendships with political rants

Spare everyone the argument that you just feel like you “have to” speak up because this election is so important. Everyone already knows the importance of this, and every, election. You told us this in 2012, remember? And 2008.

You don’t need to enrage your great-aunt Ida, who thinks Donald Trump will launch nukes the very day he takes office, by posting how you’re still a Bernie bro. Your co-worker from three jobs ago doesn’t care you think Hillary Clinton’s The! Most! Qualified! Presidential! Candidate! Ever! You haven’t found the smoking gun in Hillary’s emails, either; sorry, gumshoe.

Besides, you’re probably preaching to the choir and your friends who disagree with you have long ago silenced your missives. Facebook introduced the “unfollow” option in 2013.

A Pew study from 2014 found that about a quarter of Facebook users have blocked people over political disagreements. And that’s before the election really got into high gear. It’s easy to imagine that number being higher now.

A different Pew survey from August found that nearly half of Clinton supporters don’t have any friends who support Trump and 31 percent of Trump supporters don’t know anyone voting for Hillary. We’re already in our bubbles, why make it worse with your ranting?

I could definitely see them going with the nuclear option if it becomes obvious that they are blocking Supreme Court nominees simply because a Democrat is President.

Which I suppose is what they are doing now with Scalia's old seat, but at least they currently have the bad excuse of it becoming open less then a year before the next Presidential elections elections.
