Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Quite. The trick with civil disobedience is finding ways to do it without crossing the "actually a criminal act" line. That's why MLK warned his followers that when people started throwing bottles and sticks and stuff at them, to just keep on marching and not engage. Once you give people the rationalization they need to dismiss your movement as a bunch of criminals doing crime, you've lost the ears you were trying to reach in the first place.
A human chain in front of the bulldozer is a dare. If they run you over, they are CLEARLY the bad guy and your cause is immediately justified by association. Sabotaging the bulldozer just makes people think you're a thug.
Civil disobedience is all about PR. End of the day, the most important thing is who looks like the villain in the photos and newscasts.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Sabotaging heavy machinery, like spiking trees, is a dangerous crime and one for which you should rightfully do jail time.
Fortunately we aren't talking about a dictatorship.
The Democratic Party gaining a simple majority in the Senate has been more likely then not for most of the campaign, but over the last week they've started to really pull ahead.
Not sure if it's been mentioned (this thread's moving fast now), but Trump might have crossed the Godwin's Law line by alleging that Clinton was conspiring with "International Banks" to revoke US Sovereignty
. He didn't actually mention Jews in the statement, but fucking hell did it get too close.
Frankly, the reputation of those online communities as hotbeds of male insecurity, racism, and misogyny is one major reason why I don't hang out there. I wonder if it's at least partly responsible for the entitlement complex that is frequently found in consumers of digital media, wherein they come to believe that they are being individually targeted for persecution if creators don't do precisely what they want (even if what they want is impossible and/or blatantly contradictory).
We've seen Trump use anti-Semitic symbolism in his campaign advertising before; this is not exactly a surprise. It's also rather ironic considering that, early in his campaign, he said he'd prefer his accounting to be done by "little short guys that wear yarmulkes every day" rather than blacks. (citation)

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Trumps son-in-law in talks to create TrumpTV
after the election as many suspected. Seems he's having trouble finding people willing to invest in it.

How about this, The US just bombed Yemen, and no one's talking about it.
WTF?
The cruise missile salvo ramps up the already significant US military involvement in deeply divided and desperately poor Yemen. While it’s true that the US has launched drone strikes on al-Qaida targets in Yemen for years, sometimes killing civilians and even US citizens, this particular military engagement has the potential to drag the US straight into a protracted and escalating conflict. And, as everyone knows, America has an uncanny ability to enter protracted and escalating military conflicts.
If we investigated, we would find that the Pentagon justified this attack as retaliation. Last week, missiles were fired on two separate occasions at another navy destroyer off of Yemen’s southern coast. Those missiles fell harmlessly into the water, but they were enough of a provocation that the navy responded with its own bombardment.
It gets even more complicated from there. This is some serious shit. Can we talk about this instead of pussy-grabbing racists? Because the US Military certainly aren't waiting for the election to be resolved before they make this kind of momentous decision.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Or sabotage the bulldozer (or their fuel supply) so it can't work?
