The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Donald Trump popular with ethnic groups who do not like Islam.

@story: That rather depends on whether the democrats that particular base is worth appealing to.

When you say Trump speech in front of Hindu audiences you guys are referring to this right? No mention of them being Hindu Nationalists though it wouldn't surprise me given the content of his speech.

Modi is an asshole, but he's super straight-laced. I can't imagined he'd be thrilled about having to associate with Trump.

Eh, most Indian Americans voters tend to be liberal leaning. He's wasting his time.

The kinds of Indians who are most enthusiastic about Trump are people like Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley.

As a Hindu of Indian descent who shall be voting in this election, fuck off Trump.

Also, Modi isn't that bad. And even if you disagree with his politics, he's super chill with Obama.

A Connecticut judge threw out a suit by the families of Sandy Hook victims against Remington, owner of Bushmaster.

This was probably inevitable. Can't prosecute a dead and buried person for a straw purchase and all that...

Aside from the obvious silliness of that particular case, I can't see any net positive outcomes from lawsuits filed against gun manufacturers. I'm as much for finding legislative solutions to gun violence as the next person, but it's no more sensible to sue the manufacturers than it would be to sue a knife company when someone gets stabbed.

The idea is that gun manufacturers will stop lobbying for the laws that allow shootings to happen if those shootings hurt their bottom line. I'm not sure that would actually work, or if there's any legal basis for it.

My issue is gun manufacturers create weapons that are capable of killing a lot of people in a short amount of time and knowingly market them as having some sort of civilian, non-combat purpose, which is ridiculous in of itself.

[up] The manufacturers only do that because there is customer demand, and it is legal do so.

@storyyeller: Sanders is the ranking member of the Budget committee, so if the Democrats regain control of the Senate, he'll move up to chairman.

Malia Obama for President, 2040!

Seriously though, unlike some people I won't bother to mention, Michelle Obama looks like she has the charisma, the poise and the brains to lead a country. Also, of course, a black woman leading the US of A would be awesome.

Plus in restrospect I don't think a single scandal could be pinned on her using her husband as proxy, unlike Clinton.
