The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]x7 This is exactly why HRC is not completely totally dominating this race. While there are legitimate criticisms, those aren't the real problem. The real problem is that she's been the subject of a decades-long witch hunt. One so effective that millions of Americans believe she's a literal demon.

Seriously, there are just so many outlandish conspiracy theories and fake scandals.

Reality has a liberal bias.

I try to avoid using that saying if possible, but like...if almost all institutions of education are telling you basically the same thing, maybe you should at least consider if they have something of a point instead of claiming it's all a big conspiracy against conservatives? The simple truth is that more conservative views, by definition, tend to get left behind as the times go on and our understanding of the world around us evolves. I wouldn't completely disregard everything with traditional conservative thought out of hand, but generally speaking, it doesn't really make sense to preserve a status quo in a world that is still ridiculously unfair for a lot of people.

Yesterday's liberals are today's conservatives and all that jazz.

Just saw a Trump ad claiming that "politicians" want to take away guns, so vote Donald Trump. Hillary doesn't even care about guns. Hell, I don't think Trump does either. Considering his track record, I'm half convinced this is cover for him going crazy and trying to repeal the 2nd.

[up][up] The weird thing is, yesterday's conservatives are actually today's liberals. That is how much the Overton window has shifted to the right. HRC for example was a conservative decades ago. Now — even though she hasn't really changed that much — she's relatively liberal compared to the GOP. Barack Obama same deal — a decade or two ago, he'd be a Republican.

[up] Never mind that Donald Trump is a politician too since he is running for POTUS.

I hate how Trump is supposed to get a pass on things because he's new at this.

He really has a Never My Fault attitude, doesn't he?

He's only gets away with his incompetence because he convinced a lot of racist GOP voters that it was okay being racist by...being racist!

If he was just using normal dog whistles like every other politician he would've collapsed by September of last year.

I say if Trump wants this to be the Olympics, we ferry in Ryan Lochte and a lot of very good liquor right to Camp Trump and see how long Camp Trump lasts.

I'd rather say that American culture extols unbridled anxiety, factionalism, and righteous indignation, educated or not. Anyone who avoids those is labeled as belonging to the "other side"......by both sides.....Actually, that's common throughout the world.

So Wikileaks is claiming to have released Clinton's speech to Goldman Sachs. Doesn't look like anything too bad, or new for that matter.

Trump could write a whole book on how to appeal to ethnic nationalism. I get the feeling he more or less did that by accident rather than as an insidious political ploy, but he sure did a good job of it all the same. We're just lucky that he's an idiot marred by scandals.

One such result: Bernie Sanders would become Chairman of the Budget Committee.

Is that even possible? He's only been a Democrat for a year, and it's hard to see congressional democrats wanting to reward him after the divisive primary campaign.
