Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Apparently, Trump will be speaking soon. I believe Pence said earlier this morning that Trump would release evidence that would prove the sexual assault accusation against him false sometime today.
I'm...interested to see what this evidence might be...
Oh God! Natural light!@M84
To be fair though, if the page of the trope you just cited is to be believed, it does fit in rather well with modern political climate:

Inter arma enim silent legesDonald Trump and the Breitbart election
Breitbart is a disgusting website. Go see it for yourself. But sadly, it represents a certain movement that's growing...
"There was this effort to respond to media bias, both real and perceived, that meant discrediting mainstream journalistic institutions, but it's got to the point where people don't trust anything," one Fox News source said. "It's mind-blowing. You can play an unedited video for two minutes that includes Trump contradicting all of these things to make your point —- and they insist that the video is doctored. It's really extraordinary."
"In the regular conservative movement, Breitbart is a laughing stock," said Shapiro. "It's all spin. It's a propaganda outfit."
Nothing fuels the Breitbart contingent more than the sense that the mainstream media is working with Democrats, American corporations and a feckless Republican establishment to undermine the American middle class in order to benefit a globalist establishment.
If Trump loses badly and takes down many Republicans with him, could this harm the movement? Or make them extremize more and get further entrenched - and further alienate would-be supporters in the process?
Well, one thing about Breitbart I find "disgusting" is their use of giant titles in all caps. I'm not blind. I can read just fine.
Otherwise, I'm totally cool with fetal tissue being put up for sale.

Welp, a former The Apprentice contestant has just given a press release on Trump sexually harassing her when she was trying to get hired by him. This apparently interrupted the live coverage of Trump's latest rally.
His only competitor at this point is Bill Cosby.

I've only read one Breitbart article, it was about the Mexican Electoral System, and though it had its facts mostly right, the tone of the writer left much to be desired. I mean, it wasn't that bad until I got to the end and I saw this gem:
There is no other explanation.
... Then I got to the comments section. I wish I hadn't.
Either way, for the people in Breitbart the facts only matter if they can use it to "prove" one of their conspiracy theories. It's sad, really.
Clinton and Obama have decided to drop their previous campaign strategy of separating Republicans in general from Donald Trump.
The strategy was originally designed to appeal to moderate Republicans who don't want to be associated with the Donald. Now, however, it has become clear (so they say) that the GOP is not only enabling Trump, but acted with abject moral cowardice in supporting him to begin with, never mind continuing to do so.
“And that’s what’s happened in their party. All that bile, all the exaggeration, all the stuff that was not grounded in fact just kind of bubbled up, started surfacing. They know better, a lot of these folks who ran, and they didn’t say anything. And so they don’t get credit for, at the very last minute, when finally the guy that they nominated and they endorsed and they supported is caught on tape saying things that no decent person would even think, much less say, much less brag about, much less laugh about or joke about, much less act on, you can’t wait until that finally happens and then say, ‘Oh, that’s too much, that’s enough.’ And think that somehow you are showing any kind of leadership and deserve to be elected to the United States Senate.
“You don’t get points for that. In fact, I’m more forgiving of the people who actually believe it than the people who know better and stood silently by, out of political expediency, because it was politically convenient.”
Go get 'em, tiger. And, respectfully, to Hell with anyone who tries to argue that "they're both just as bad".

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Breibart runs deep with sensationalism, conspiracy theories and their compromise with facts only lasts if it suits their beliefs.
There isn't much journalism there besides gathering the hate and attention from reactionaries and racists, they try to pass themselves as serious journalismTM on the surface but once you read further into their articles you can see the bile and the hateful messages they unsubtly leave on their articles.
These are the guys who will tell you with a straight face that BLM is a terrorist organization, imply it is the Jews who're behind EVERYTHING and how liberals are the cause of all problems in modern society, how PC is a code of white genocide, on and on.
Inter arma enim silent legesSounds like a digital form of Rush Limbaugh's persona.
Limbaugh is on the fringes of the alt-right. He doesn't traffic in the same kind of crazy "Martian zombies ate Obama's brain" conspiracies that Alex Jones and Breitbart do, but he has been instrumental in stirring the fires of the anti-fact, wildly liberal-hating right. In particular, he has been vehemently sexist in his attitudes and is a rape apologist.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Also, it comes across as really self-serving and disingenuous to me especially because trump's misogyny is nothing new or shocking. Not that the comments from the tape aren't horrible, but if you do even the most superficial research into his history, or if you were following him in this election cycle, the contempt he has for women as individuals is extremely transparent.
This is a man that was accused of raping his wife, repeatedly insults any woman who criticizes him by calling them ugly or crazy, considers the basic bodily functions of women "disgusting", repeatedly insists that women are self-serving harpies who only care about men's money and status, and only ever considers their value in terms of their appearance or their status as trophies.
You'd have to be pretty clueless or ignorant of history not to see that this was a man who most certainly didn't respect women. The comments he made may be slightly more overt and gross than the stuff he usually says, but it's not exactly a big surprise that he would say things like that since it's just an extension of the ideas he's espoused for decades. Then again, that some people refuse to see "isms" unless the people involved are extremely explicit in their behaviors is a well-established fact so this isn't super surprising.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone in real life who so perfectly embodied the Never My Fault trope.
Disgusted, but not surprised
