Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Here's the thing though; my mother already HATES Donald Trump. She hates Clinton, but she hates Trump even more. If she thinks Clinton's Grandma Nixon, then she thinks Trump is the Devil. While she thinks we could at least live through a Clinton presidency, she knows that if Trumps wins, we're as good as fucked. So it's not that she hates Clinton and supports Trump, but that she despises both candidates and only loathes Clinton somewhat less than she does Trump.
Also, she thinks the last President with honesty, integrity, and brains we've had was Ronald Reagan, and has either disliked or hated every single President we've had since. Just figured I should mention it.

For those baffled about why Trump enjoys continued support, Cracked's David Wong has a pretty good write-up about the matter
, attributing it to those in rural areas getting royally fucked over yet not actually receiving much in the way of help time and again. Especially poignant are his comments about the attention paid to New Orleans vs. all of Mississippi in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in spite of receiving the same amount of damage (at least in terms of dollar cost), the fact that the Great Recession's recovery went almost exclusively to the cities, and being made the butt of jokes while others in similar situations (poor, addicted to drugs, etc.) are given sympathy.
And speaking as someone that lives in a rural area (and thus fairly red, even by NY standards)... yeah, he pretty much hits the nail on the head. Where I live, if you don't have a vehicle, you are straight-up fucked in terms of having a choice in employment. Hell, even with a car, my place of work is 4 miles away - if I had to walk/run/bike instead, it'd be much longer to get there (about 5 as it stands now), and nigh-impossible in certain weather conditions when I'd still have to be there anyway.

Well, that's just more worship of the idolized version of Reagan that moderate Republicans are so in love with, which is completely discordant from the actual Reagan.
Islamic scripture promoting a repressive mentality (especially towards women) as indicated by statistics showing percentages of believers who want see opinions against it silenced.
Overzealous digital policing of social media and other outlets enforced by members of the more authoritarian left vying for influence.
Denouncing safe spaces and radical gender studies on college campuses.
- "Cult-like mentality" is a poison pill word with no semantic value.
- I know Muslims who do not hold "repressive" views. So it's not universal, and if they want to see that mentality, they have only to look at certain Christian groups here in the U.S. It's not clear what that has to do with the message of feminism anyway.
- "Policing of social media by authoritarian"... aaaand I stopped listening.
- I think he means "safe spaces" in the sense of, "Manly men are being told they can't grope women or shout homophobic slurs wherever they want." And I have absolutely no idea what "radical gender studies" means, but I'd imagine it's an elective.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Huh? Now I'm really curious to see some citations. And not links to his videos, please. I'm about to eat lunch.

Journalists? Banned from certain public spaces for certain events? Cry me a fucking river.
Well, if you focused on the food instead of the video you'd be enlightened to an identical extent...

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot@kkhohoho: Well, then I'd emphasize the need to keep the country afloat, and the best way to do that would be to vote for Hillary Clinton.

Oh God! Natural light!@ironballs16: I covered that topic (the disenfranchisement of rural America) a bit here
and here
.
But anyway, even if they are being completely dismissed and disenfranchised by everyone, what is going to change that? Is some magic genie going to nuke the cities and stop them from being centers of economic power? Trump can't fix that even if he were inclined to, which he isn't.
Umm, you aren't making sense. Are there public events where feminists are barring journalists because of the threat of violence? That sounds more like what I'd expect from Donald Trump rallies, and doesn't fit any kind of mental definition of "safe space" that I hold.

That article makes no sense at all, and there is absolutely nothing in it stating or implying that a reporter was threatened with violence at a protest. It sounds like a woman who was trying to obstruct both police and journalists got fired from her job and is now suffering PTSD from the experience. It seems rather sad, all things being equal, but I can't pin down anything that places blame on "liberal culture".

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Do you know what annoys me about some on the Left? The way they act like their criticism of Trump has to be legitimated beforehand by saying something in the variety of, "Don't get me wrong, both candidates are garbage, but...." It's pure sophistry, and it makes it seem like Hillary's own base is saying Hillary is just as much of a disgusting bastard as Trump is, except for one issue that ends up being the straw that broke the camel's back, when the gulf between them as leaders and as human beings is immense. Working against it is exhausting — convincing people to vote Democrat is a continual, months-long process of working against decades of a priori assumptions about her character that originated as right-wing smears, and no one realizes they've been punked until you tell it to them fifty times.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."@kkhohoho: So long as she's voting for Clinton, why don't you just let her believe Clinton is Gramdma Nixon? She may hate both candidates, but she is obviously not doing the "Both sides are the same" garbage since she understands that Clinton is the better choice relative to Trump. You are not going to convince anyone who believes Reagan is the last good president that either candidate is as good as Reagan. According to various polls, both candidates are the two most disliked ones with Trump being more disliked than Clinton. It is obvious that Clinton is going to be a very disliked President when she hopefully wins the election, especially considering you have both the people who dislike her but are voting for her because Trump scares them shitless and the people who voted for Trump over her that will be sore about losing.

I'm ashamed to say I was originally the same. I'm not sure exactly when or how that changed, but now I do respect and even admire HRC for her leadership qualities. I think she'll make a fine POTUS on her own merits and not just because "she's not Trump".

Disgusted, but not surprisedAlso, Washington Times. Not exactly the most reputable of sources, but who gives a shit when you can get all your news from a meme page!
