The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So anyone see the Nate Silver polls that compare what the electoral map would be like if only men or women voted? Where the map is nearly all red w/ men only votes and the map is nearly all blue w/ women only votes?

Take a guess how the Trump supporters reacted. Go on, guess.

Yeah, we've already discussed that.

Still, that article has more example tweets, although it also shows people using the hashtag that are opposed to it.

One of the comments made a biting remark about how the "Blacks For Trump" sign would be much more convincing if an actual black person was holding it.

I'm not a US citizen but if I was, as a guy I would be very sad that if it was up to us and us alone we wouldn't be able to stop Trump. Even with all the misogyny I didn't think it would be that drastic a difference, but I guess that shows I just have way too much faith.

This isn't anything new, by the way. It was like that in the last election too. I'd wager that gender map has more or less looked the same for awhile.

It's too bad I'm in one of them that's red no matter what, but, eh, it's not like where I am matters that much anyway.

Remember Trump has been deserted by men with college degrees, so it's possible that his map is actually bluer than the map would have been for Mc Caine or Romney.

So, as has probably been asked many a time in this thread, does anyone know how to convince a family member that Clinton isn't Grandma Nixon? Because my mother is deadset on this being the case. The thing is, she's an excellent debater, so much so that she actually kind of makes a case for Trump's counts of 'crooked lying Hilary' being at least somewhat accurate. For one thing, there was apparently this scandal with Bill back in the 90's that Hilary helped cover up, though I'd have to do some more research on that to confirm it. The other is the whole Benghazi scandal, which my mother cites as further proof of Hilary being Grandma Nixon. The point is though, she keeps telling me that 'she's crooked, she lies, you can't trust her', and regardless of how much I actually like Hilary, I can't really think of anything to rebut her with that she can't counter. Any advice? Or should I just avoid bringing it up altogether?

The map also makes a point of how potent women's votes are if all of them voted in a state. The fact that as many states are red as they are suggests consistently more men vote than women on average per state. There's multiple reasons why that might be the case, but this many states where that's the case suggests something that isn't too great.

[up][up][up]You might be fighting a losing battle, there, depending on how obtuse she chooses to be. The only real option you have is to keep emphasizing Trump's insanity and bigotry, and hope for the best. My family has a friend who went from being a Benghazi believer to being a Hillary voter come November, due in no small part to my evangelism of the Democratic platform, but specifically by repeatedly driving all of Trump's worst moments home until he decided he couldn't stomach being associated with Trump's ilk. He was one of the "both candidates are garbage and will fuck us over equally!" camp, which is fucking daft, but there you have it.

Benghazi is more of a case of ethics. You have to take into account the amount of turmoil at that moment, to the point that Clinton might not have wanted to only further it (due to not having much information about who was doing it).

Along with this, you have to realize that Benghazi is, as Obama himself put it, "a sideshow." It's nothing more than a fake scandal that basically panders to the conspiracy theorists. The investigations went on for way too long - longer than even the 9/11 or Watergate commissions - and it was explicitly said that the point for these investigations was to make Hillary look bad.

Really, what would Trump have done in her shoes? Bomb the shit out of them? It irritates me to hear people criticize her actions when other events in a similar light to Benghazi were never treated this way. Hell, 9/11 itself was never a warcry against Bush, now was it?

[up] The irritating part is that Benghazi was as much the GOP Congress' fault as Secretary Hillary's. They're the morons who slashed funding for embassy security.

Come to think of it, the IT security issues of the State Department are also due to the GOP dominated Congress refusing to raise their budget.

Eh, to a first approximation, nobody has good it security, which isn't down to budgets, it's because good IT security is difficult, and the intelligence services of all advanced nations lobby against it, which makes it harder still.

The only places with appropriate levels of hardening against info-war I can even think of all involve splitting atoms. The nuclear deterrent and nuclear power people (.. in all nations) are all very fond of air-gaps and manual backup systems.. I suspect the groups working on bio-war defense might also be paranoid enough, but I don't actually know.

I've no sympathy for the rural white poor who vote for Donald Trump.

They have no political discernment, they cannot recognize through analysis of his policies that they'd screw themselves over electing him.

Louts will be louts, let them continue watching their way of life die.

[up] I can't recall the link now, but I remember reading an article covering some rural Trump supporters who are voting for him even though they don't think his platform will help them get healthcare. Healthcare that they desperately need. They are apparently hoping for trickle-down to give them enough to tide them over.

They refuse to vote for HRC even though part of her platform would help them get healthcare.

I've heard over and over that many of Trump's supporters have valid and sympathetic reasons to support him. With each passing day it's becoming harder to believe this.
