The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] John Oliver (apologies for constantly bringing him up — actually no I'm not the least bit sorry cuz he's awesome) brought this up too in his recent segment which featured the tape. Donald is in many ways the embodiment of a culture of toxic masculinity. John thinks it's almost fitting that the first female presidential nominee, Hillary Rodham Clinton, would face someone like Donald Trump as the Final Boss.

This part of the article jumped out at me:

Meanwhile, 65-year-old Ed in Summit, Wisconsin, still plans to vote for Trump. “It was inappropriate and unprofessional,” he said, referring to the Republican nominee’s remarks on women. But, “having been in a number of locker rooms in my years ... there’s always somebody in there that’s trying to be more macho than the guy next to him. Ms. Clinton couldn’t control her husband in the past. How is she going to control the country?”
So let me get this straight, the main crux of this article is men feeling emasculated by women, yet part of this guy's problem with Clinton is she couldn't control her husband?

Don't try to understand the logic behind these people. Doublethink is by far and away the most powerful force on the Right these days.

Okay, so favors have to be repaid sometime down the line, since politics is still a form of human interaction.

Favours only have to be repaid if the favours happen, that's not a must, ambassadorships are generally given in exchange for campaign donations, so if the money was gotten out of politics one woulda no longer need such favours and thus no longer need to repay such favours with ambassadorships.

The Alt-Right isn't going to riot... Instead, they will just gum up the workings of government so long as they have a political party that will capitulate to their whims with governmental power. The difference with the Alt-Right compared to other forms of bigotry is that they are willing to go through the same sort of processes other groups do to get their voices heard and nothing beyond that. I mean, if we are going to link Trump to the Tea Party, we should also remember that the Tea Party began as a protest against the government.

The Alt-Right is just going to bitch and moan about it on facebook and other forums, they are the least likely to riot or rebel because they need either to get out of their comfy houses and computers or use their mother's credit card and permission to go out.

No really, the Alt-right is almost entirely built by Internet Tough Guys, the prospect of actually having to do something besides whining is discouraging for them.

Maybe you'll see something like the Y'all Qaeda trying to do some stupid shit but they will prove to be more embarrassing and idiotic than a threat.

It's amazing how the right is scrambling to find scandals that prove Hillary has some ties to corporate donors which, I mean, we knew that. Meanwhile, the left keeps finding scandals that prove that Trump is a f*cking sexual predator.

It's funny that Trump threatened Clinton with a "special prosecutor" when he's guilty of so many actual crimes. I'm half expecting him, on elections day, to be told he won the election and is going to be President of the United States, only to show up to be sworn in and find this waiting for him.

@Silasw: The way it's presented, it sounds like this is a problem whose solution is akin to just walking two blocks to the convenience store to pick up milk. I don't particularly think "getting money out of politics" is that straightforward.

The alt-right might be internet born but Trump has a lot of supporters who have never heard of 4chan or Reddit. They're aware of Twitter and Facebook because those are mainstream but they aren't necessarily internet-literate given their age and education.

Also, let's be real: his supporters are tilted way towards the older generations. For every alt-right shitposter on reddit, there are ten decrepit white old men longing for Trump to bring back the halcyon days of their youth, with a house, a white picket fence, and the corpse of a black man hanging from a tree in the backyard.

Does anybody remember that clip from The Apprentice that was on the The Daily Show the other day, where Trump fires a woman for crude language, saying that his boardroom wasn't a locker room?

Well, that woman, Maria Kanellis, had this to say.

So, anyone heard of that LA times tracking poll that consistently put Trump ahead? Apparently, it was all because of one 19yo African-american man from Illinois who was assigned very heavy weight in the poll to represent the 18-21 African-american demographic.

The 18-21 African-American male demographic, represented by one person who was weighted super heavily to compensate, and that person happens to be a 1-percenter in his demographic who is an ardent conservative. Amazing. Of such tiny things are major errors made.

the alt right coalition reminds me a lot of the-hashtag-that-shalt-not-be-named in that they're very loud and very annoying but I don't think they're actually capable of much. For all their bluster Trump is losing badly. Historically badly if he doesn't catch a rebound soon.

The gender politics present in this election is some next level shit. Nothing encapsulates that better then trump having a hissy fit that he didn't get to talk as much as clinton despite having her by a minute in the final tally. I'm really interested to see what the % of women voting trump will land on. I'm guessing no more then 30% when all is said and done.

[up]They are that confederation of dunces. Stormfront and other Internet neo-Nazis figured them out and started pushing them towards reactionary ideology.

You know, of the last debate the thing I most vividly remember is Trump standing behind Hillary way too close. It reminded me a little of an encounter I had a few months ago when a child walked up to me as I as walking through my town and looked at me as if I were a curious artwork.

A friend of mine said it reminded them of how their abusive ex used to act when irritated.
