Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'll worry about Trump's sad widdle ego after he's no longer a clear and present danger to the survival of this nation.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"ThinkProgress is reporting
that NBC was late to release the scandalous Trump tape last Friday (that it had acquired from Access Hollywood) because it was in internal discussions about editing Billy Bush's parts out, since Bush was (at the time) an anchor of the Today show. This delay is what allowed the Washington Post to scoop them, and caused them to release the unedited version themselves later that day. Bush was fired from Today two days later, as we know.
NBC denies the allegation.
As a secondary story, Bush has apparently led an aggressively undistinguished career in soft journalism. Remember the Ryan Lochte scandal in Rio during the Olympics? Well, Billy boy's the one who got the initial interview with Lochte, during which he allowed the swimmer's dubious story to pass unchallenged, and was later read the riot act on national TV over it. He certainly continues the family tradition of mediocrity, doesn't he?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well, it is hard to dehumanize something that is already...an orange.

Just a little song.

Yep. Billy's George Senior's nephew, and George Junior's cousin. Apparently, it was Billy's bragging to colleagues at the Rio Olympics about having a tape of Trump being "a real dog" that caused it to be dug up in the first place. That sort of "locker room" talk is something to which the young Bush scion is apparently quite accustomed.
Oops! Fixed.

Also, going back to something nervmeister said: Trump would sooner drive nails into his own eyes than abandon his ambitions in order to promote another candidate at this stage in the race.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Huh, wasn't sure if they were related or not.
On a related note - is Justice Kennedy related to JFK?

Oh God! Natural light!Kennedy's Wikipedia article
says nothing about any relationship.
USA Today posted an article talking about John Oliver's LWT segment from Sunday
, wherein he played a montage of Billy Bush's creepy interviews over the years, including a litany of inappropriate questions directed towards female celebrities. Dude's not an accidental victim in all this.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I figured it was pretty common. I suppose it's just that when the name "Kennedy" comes up in politics, I assumed that it meant the Kennedys.

...My God. The stuff he said about Selena Gomez was especially...eugh.

Oh God! Natural light! In PBS's look at both Trump and Clinton's lives, it actually opened with this for Trump. This was PBS, I might add.

if anyone cares (may be region locked).
On another subject.
The new face of the pro-life movement: young, female, secular, feminist.
New pro-life groups that draw heavily on young people are starting to rebrand the message - treating abortion as a human rights issue for the fetus. I think that's a step in the right direction for said pro-life movement, but the new pro-lifers need to really firmly disassociate themselves with the existing movement and all the bullshit it's getting involved in (you know, stuff like the reversible-abortion lie) if they want to be taken seriously - which will, unfortunately for them, result in nothing getting done on their side, for the same reason that moderate Republicans have to choose between kissing Tea Party ass and getting nothing done.
Putting this
out here, courtesy of NPR, due to the overreliance on the Trump is a Russian puppet meme on this thread. Explains more cogently than I why thats a bit overstated. It's only about 5 minutes, and the hacker stuff is only toward the end, but its worth a read.
Similarly, it's less likely that Trump is being fed propaganda directly from Russia, than he is surrounded by the alt-right
(who latch on to the propaganda because it fits their narrative).

I never really thought he was a "puppet", just that Russia seems to be...well, a bit friendly with that scum. After all, who's easier to handle, a experienced and intelligent former Secretary of State or a business mogul with delusions of grandeur and no political experience whatsoever?
Also, something to add to the waterfall of "Republicans leaving trump" news that I think might be something: GLEN BECK WANTS PEOPLE TO OPPOSE TRUMP BECAUSE IT'S RIGHT.
GLEN. BECK.

You know, that's actually complimentary towards Obama considering that those jokes were in 2011 and that Trump was considering running in 2012 but backed out. I'd like to think that he was scared that he wouldn't win against Obama so that's why he's doing it now. Now, I'm actually being rather calm because I had spent 30 minutes punching a tree.

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.

If by some awful tragedy he wins the election, then he can have my sympathy when he pries it from my cold, dead fingers.
But he's going to have to really search to find them because I'll be renting a ski lodge in Hell. Gonna be the first person to snowboard those slopes.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.
