The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It seems that Hillary was sometimes cruel or sneaky towards Bill's accusers, which I don't appreciate.

However, I find it suspicious that his most ardent accusers went to conservative or neo-conservative websites to tell their stories. Unless the mainstream media really does have a liberal bias. Why couldn't the accusers break tell their stories to one of the mainstream news sources?

I was accused of misandry because I don't really like Trump. I was then treated to a tirade about how women follow instead of leading. Projection much?

I find it asinine to vote for a woman just because I'm a woman as well, FWIW. I care more about they conduct themselves.

I'm willing to bet that the same people who told you women follow instead of leading are also massive fans of Margaret Thatcher.

Just a hunch...

It seems cruelly ironic. Innocent until proven guilty usually isn't treated as a thing in people's mind in most cases, but then when it comes to rape and sexual assault, it goes into overdrive to often being harmfully dismissive of the potential victim.
Depends. Sadly there's usually no middle ground. Either the victim gets dismissed and/or indirectly punished for coming forward, or the victim's accusation is instantly believed and the accusee gets thrown under the bus by his/her employers or campus and branded in the public eye before an investigation can start clarifying things, guilty or not. Or maybe both happen.

I think that Hillary would come across better if she yelled a little less. It's kind of annoying to be yelled at, even if you agree with what she says.

Good on Paul Ryan (never thought I'd say that) for not campaigning for Trump anymore.

The amount of projection from some Trump supporters is insane.

[up][up][up]But what could an investigation possibly prove? Usually the material facts aren't in dispute, just the mental facts. How do you prove consent without a tape recording of them saying "I consent to this"? The best you can hope for is circumstantial evidence like a witness saying they left a party together, but obviously that's not good enough to prove a crime.

When does she ever shout?! She's inhumanly composed! Also, she's speaking in public: every male politician shouts. Why can't she?

I don't follow...

Thatcher was a Conservative (with a capital C) leader who is greatly loved by the right wing in just about every country. She was, in some ways, Britain's Reagan. (You know, in terms of policies and pop culture standing and current reverence from the right and so on.)

I'm suggesting that even people who aren't willing to accept that a woman can be a great leader are so conservative that they'll still worship Thatcher.

The 538 models are getting more confident in Hillary's chances.

She's currently sitting at 87.8% on the Now-Cast (highest since August 17th), 83.8% on the Polls-Only model (highest since August 23rd), and 80.5% on the Polls-Plus (highest ever).

If the NBC/WSJ poll is part of a trend, I would expect the Now-Cast the crack 90% in the next couple of days. If it stays up there then the Polls-Only and Polls-Plus will follow suite in a week or so (since they make fewer and fewer assumptions about future changes to the polls when the election gets closer and closer) and we could end up going into the election with Hillary with a 95% chance of victory.

....which somehow still doesn't feel high enough. Trump is a really bad candidate.

80% is a high number, but somehow staking the fate of the nation/world on a 1-in-5 chance isn't particularly comfortable.

Hey I was just wondering, as someone that doesn't really follow US news a lot. Why do so many people think Hilary Clinton's a bad person?

I'm not super qualified to answer that question, but my understanding is that there has been a very persistent smear campaign leveled against her for a very long time, perpetuated mostly by the US's right wing media. Many people, even left-leaning liberals, have bought into it at least a little, so the impression I get is that a lot of people have this vague contempt for her but without really that much good reason.

The email thing was legitimately a mistake on her part, but I don't think it would have been as big a deal if it were another politician.

I think a lot of it has to do with her husband, who, to be fair, was kind of a slut. I have no idea if he still is.

You will hear a lot about the Clintons. Before you go believing any of it, consider how whoever told you such-and-such about them would benefit from your believing them.

There were some long and detailed posts on the topic just a couple pages back.

This sort of thing is making me wonder how Hillary will be viewed in the future. If she's an overall good president who does her hardest to improve things then maybe she'll be vindicated.

[up][up] Warren Buffet seems to be a genuinely good person. He made a pact ages ago with Bill Gates (and someone else I don't remember) to donate a huge chunk of their income to charity. It's good to see that he's actually following through on that. Hell, he donates so much that he actually breaks the ceiling on tax breaks, and he pays the taxes on that anyway.

Clinton must be truly confident, as one of her major Super PA Cs is probably going to start working on the Senate when it was previously focused on her exclusively.
