The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

For the purpose of this discussion, what is the definition of stadium? All schools I've ever been at (save for one which was so large that I didn't see every part of it) or seen have a moderately sized gym field, the last of which about 75 x 150 m in size.

(Also, just saw on Wikipedia that apparently an asteroid was named after a pupil in my last school. Huh...)

The debate coach graded Clinton and Trump once again.

Clinton: B

Trump: D+

Re: Trump physically attacking Hillary; i don't think he actually would. It's not his style. When he wants to hurt someone he sics lackeys on them.

Re:

[quoteblock]I think that might be the ultimate problem with any attempt to streamline education... People have different ways of learning.[/quoteblock]

This, to a degree, was my problem. I was singled out from the start as "gifted" and had accelerated tracks and enrichment programs and such but by the time I hit high school most of that was gone; I got bored and had never had to develop the discipline to work hard at what came easy. I think there's also some chance that if I'd been born 5 or 10 years later I might have been diagnosed with ADD, whether or not it was actually the case.

Didn't Trump get an F in the first debate?

[up] Hence why all the pundits are claiming he did "better" in this debate. His first debate was just that bad.

The same coach graded the first debate as such:

Clinton: B

Trump: F

http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/27/opinions/debate-coach-clinton-trump-debate/index.html

So Trump went up slightly over one letter grade (and a D+ is still not a pass in a lot of Graduate programs, mine demands a B- at least) while Clinton held steady.

Well to be fair, I do think it is important for students to have their athletic skills supported but that should be balanced against the needs of other students.

In my school, and I don't think this is uncommon, the football team pretty much got the lion's share of funding, to the point where other sports were in the same low-budget boat as the arts and other programs.

Trump has moved up from an F to a D+, and in doing so has "exceeded expectations". Ergo, he won.

[up] Frankly, I don't think that the goal of a school athletics program should be to prepare students for collegiate sports. It should be to establish and maintain physical fitness. Students can participate in private sports programs on their own time.

And the 3rd debate is the same format at the first more or less, which is the format that Clinton is most comfortable in. The only problem is that Fox News anchor Chris Wallace is the moderator, but he's not too bad by Faux standards IIRC.

If future Trump Tapes are even worse I don't think it will matter. People will probably stop relying on the debates to make a decision. The fact that anyone is still undecided baffles me.

Clinton has a lot of negatives as a Presidential candidate, and in any normal race, those would be getting a lot more airplay.

I was quite surprised to find out my kids' school does this. Our school is something like 98% military families ... they supply for everyone.
Obviously, teaching children about the true history of the country, rather than a fantasy, is fundamentally wrong.

[up]Yeah, but a lot of people just take that as proof of corruption instead of just the scandals not being anything. I get the reasoning, it's kind of hard to rack your brain around why Republicans would spend so much time trying to destroy/discredit two people.

[up] The Clintons are probably the most vetted family in American politics. The GOP has considered Hillary Clinton their Arch-Enemy ever since she helped nearly get Nixon impeached. They have been at it for decades. A lot of Millennial voters are younger than the smear campaign.

And yes, where there's smoke, there's usually fire. But in this case, nearly all of the smoke is from a smoke machine.

[up] For that first one, HRC was arguably doing her job to the best of her ability as a defense attorney. Note that this was a job she was forced to take by the judge at the time.

As for that second one — that is a very complicated story. Suffice to say, there's also a lot of evidence suggesting that Broaddrick was not being truthful. She did sign a sworn affadavit in 1998 in which she denied that Bill Clinton raped her.

The first one is pretty much false. [nja] (although good in case anyone is interested)

Edit- Without weighing in either way as to the truth of Broaddick's accusation, I think the overall idea of attacking Clinton based on Bill's indiscretions is based on an implicit assumption of bad motives on her part (sometimes made explicit). What I mean, is that the narrative is basically premised on the idea that Hilary knew these accusations to be true and that her reason for defending Bill was based on some selfish calculation. As opposed to rightly or wrongly disbelieving them and being motivated by "spousal loyalty".

I think working as a public defender is pretty honorable regardless of who you're defending as long as you don't deliberately sabotage your own defense instead of allowing for a fair trial, but evidently I and some part of American society disagree on that.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
