The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, at this point I'd say the only question is by how much Trump loses. A landslide victory for Clinton is a real possibility now.

His behavior during that debate really reinforced the predatory image suggested in that leaked tape. And his veiled threat to have HRC put in jail was...alarming to say the least.

Just watched the debate now (it was at 4:00 AM Israel time). Trump wasn't as bad as I expected him to be (but then I expected him to do everything short of actually shooting Clinton), while Clinton did quite well. I think the election is pretty much sealed for her as this point.

I'm not sure he was conscious of doing it, either. It's an ingrained pattern for him to physically intimidate women.

[up] Though if it bothered HRC, she sure didn't show it. As Samantha Bee from Full Frontal said, "she's one of the only people in this country who is not afraid of a bully."

And that's what Trump is at heart. He's The Bully.

The dominant emotion that I sensed in her was frustration that the U.S. political system has devolved to the point where she has to face this clown on a debate stage.

People blame horrible public education, but I believe US public schools weren't any more horrible a few decades ago than they were now, were they?

[up][up][up] My personal experience with the elementary education system, by way of my son, is that it's doing a pretty good job. But I live in a reasonably affluent district that can afford good schools.

I do think there is some degree of worse in the school system in the last decade. I was out before the full effects of No Child Left Behind came into full force, the Bush administration law that made standardized tests the be all, end all of teaching on a federal scale (management of schools is one of those things mostly delegated to the state and local governments).. Because of the fear brought on by school shootings, there's also been an increase in boneheaded 'Zero Tolerence' policies of anything that looks even remotely violet and, well, we have a whole OTC thread about that if you want an idea of how boneheaded they are.

However, there was one chart I saw on the NCLB website at the time that was particularly illuminating. It was a line graph of money spent on education vs standardized test scores over 30-40 years or so. The caption was something to the effect of "we've made improvements over the years and with this investment we can make a difference." The money line on the graph was a very sharp uphill curve. The test score line was very nearly flat.

And that's just national averages, before you consider schools in poor districts, schools in states where conservatives are trying to push curriculums pushing their agenda in antiscience and propaganda history, etc.

The lesson I got from that (at a time when I was working to GTFO of high school and into an early college) was that simply throwing money at the schools isn't going to do anything. Definitely put the money toward the schools that are struggling for the lack of it but don't only do that. I could go into a long post on things I'd specifically like changed but would sum it up as a complete revamp on the way school is done and I'm very behind alternative models like the Montessori schools and Bard High School Early College and I think critical thinking skills need to be high on the forefront of any education plan.

It's outrageous that in the richest country on earth, you have school teachers going onto Go Fund Me so they can buy textbooks for their students and the food kitchen brings extra food on Fridays so students can eat over the weekend.

So Pence says that he has no intention of dropping out, and that the rumors were false.

Also, the debate probably won't do what Trump needed it to do, bring his numbers back up.

Let's be fair here: No Child Left Behind passed with ninety percent support. This wasn't Bush being an idiot and ramming through a bad law. Everyone thought it was a wonderful idea, and it was only when it was implemented that the flaws became obvious.

Trump's strategy seems to be attacking Bill Clinton to deflect the impact of the tapes. But Bill is far more popular than he is, at least among Democrats and Independents, so he's really just going to make himself worse.

As long as Clinton's nerves of steel hold out (I have no doubt that they will), Trump's attacks will at best (for him) do nothing.

I am not opposed to standardized testing in a general sense, but the flaws come into play when the obvious (and predictable) outcome of tying the testing to school ratings and therefore budgets is that schools will teach students to take the test, rather than emphasize learning skills, critical thinking skills, and other more generally applicable skills. There's also the incentive to cheat, which resulted in some rather high-profile scandals in recent memory.

The idea of having a unified national curriculum is excellent. The idea of using rigorous metrics to judge school performance is also good. But the devil is in the details, and it's in those details that NCLB fell down.

Yes, I know calling a John Oliver segment good is redundant.

[up][up] Has Trump forgotten that he isn't running against Bill? Or is he just such a chauvinist that he thinks that Hillary is nothing but an extension of her husband? Or is he projecting his own insecurities of being "cucked" on to Hillary Clinton?

The country absolutely needs a unified curriculum. Budget connections are idiotic though. Ideally they'd be based on student population.
