Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

yeah, nobody here denied that Hilary won, the issue is HOW MUCH she won, the first debate hurt trump a lot, to the point many in /pol/ admit it, here Trump come as jerkish...but not much of a meltdown everyone was expecting.
she punch him in the nose, but he life to spread his stupidy another day
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"
that's pretty optimistic, given the kind of person trump has shown himself to be. (ie, arrogant, ignorant, bull-headed, & incapable of learning from mistakes)
I'll start believing trump has any chances left, when he actual starts showing signs of improving.

I'm afraid I can't explain myself, sir. Because I am not myself, you see?
well according to 538's now cast, its actually a 13.9% chance.
but yeah, I meant optimistic for his supporters. unfortunately, for us, we still have to pay attention to him for a month, but at least now I'm not losing sleep over it.

I'm afraid I can't explain myself, sir. Because I am not myself, you see?A thought occurred to me - do you think that this debate focused more on the issues than the previous one?
Oh God! Natural light!Ruskbots? Redrobos? We need a good name for the russian internet defense force.
Well from CNN and a few of the more scientific instant polling looks like Clinton got the win so very slightly. Of course who "wins" the debate generally actually occurs with whoever has the better soundbites. Trump calling for clinton to be locked up and throwing pence under the bus make for some delicious noise. I expect both of those to be the major talking points come the morning shows.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?I gotta give props to Putin, that's quite an achievement.
Donald was able to clear the very low bar set for him, but HRC still did better according to the polls.
Donald also came across as somewhat predatory and creepy, pacing around behind HRC in a vain attempt to intimidate her. He also threatened to set up a special prosecution to have her jailed if he becomes president. Which is rather...fascistic.
And pretty much every time Trump spoke about actual issues, he was either lying or demonstrating that he knows absolutely nothing about the issue. For example, he's pretty much clueless about what's going on in Syria.
HRC for her part handled the personal attack questions directed at her well enough and actually managed to discuss the actual relevant issues. You could tell by the end that she was pretty much sick of Trump's crap.
The best part was the end. When someone asked them what they admired about the other person, Hillary responded that she respected Donnie's children (note she didn't say his parenting) probably because of her daughter Chelsea's friendship with Ivanka. Trump responded that he respected HRC's Determinator nature.
Some of the media pundits still tried to frame this as a good night for Trump. Gotta keep that clickbait ratings horse race going.

Disgusted, but not surprisedTrump's whole candidacy is so utterly nonsensical that this debate could actually end up putting him back in the race. Who knows. He hasn't been disqualified yet, which in itself is a complete Violation of Common Sense.

He may have demoralized some of Clinton's flakier supporters though, and turnout collapsing for democrats is pretty much the only way he comes out ahead. That's extremely unlikely to be enough on its own, though I doubt he's going to lose support from this debate. He might regain some of the support lost from the hot mic tapes.
Ultimately, I'm not quite ready to call it, and I personally suspect it will be close-ish (Clinton +3/+4 or so) simply because the fundamentals of this race favor an extremely tight race.

I don't believe so, but I don't know for sure.
Oh God! Natural light!
