Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It was kinda creepy how he was lurking.
I feel like I have a lot of impotent rage in this election. I can't convince my family that Trump doesn't seem like a very nice guy. What's the point of being angry if I can't change anything with it?

Do not obey in advance.I tend to pace a lot when I'm, say, talking to my parents, as a way to sort of work off excess energy - my mom gets annoyed by it. Maybe I should work on getting that under control...

Oh God! Natural light! Also from CNN: was Trump's "I'm going to appoint a special prosecutor to put you in jail" a bigger gaffe than it might have originally appeared?
It does seem to bring to mind Christ Christie's witch hunt at the RNC...
Oh God! Natural light!as someone who also tends to pace, I wanna say he comes off as creepy because of what he's doing while pacing. I'm usually off in my own little world, my attention, not really on anything around me.
Trump, clearly has his attention on Hillary, making what he's doing mimic predatory behavior (like actual animal predators), hence, creepy.
I'm afraid I can't explain myself, sir. Because I am not myself, you see?I just don't know who Trump is trying to persuade with these sorts of attacks. There were times I thought he was about to physically attack Clinton. How can anyone want that as President?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Also, apparently Rudy Giuliani has been going off about Bill Clinton's semen being on Monica Lewinsky's desk?
Can anyone confirm this?
Oh God! Natural light!MSNBC were talking about how he was getting closer to her during all this pacing, and just sort of looming over her. Maybe the pacing wouldn't have come off as so creepy if he hadn't been getting closer to her and trying to physically dominate her like that. Also, he repeatedly said he was going to jail her after he won because.... various reasons that she's already been declared not guilty of.
Well, uh... even if true, it's twenty years out of date and Lewinsky herself has already sounded off about the whole thing. Which reminds me I actually intended to buy that book of hers once. Not sure what Giuliani hoped to gain from that.

"I'll tell you what. I didn't think I'd say this, and I'm going to say it, and hate to say it: If I win, I'm going to instruct the attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation because there's never been so many lies, so much deception … A very expensive process, so we're going to get a special prosecutor because people have been, their lives have been destroyed for doing one-fifth of what you've done. And it's a disgrace, and honestly, you ought to be ashamed."
THIS IS HOW FASCISM STARTS!
New Survey coming this weekend!Clinton on CNN: "[Trump] was very present."
They didn't catch the whole thing, but I think she mentioned her "stool", so I believe she was referring to his "lurking".
And CNN's poll says that Clinton won the debate, but 63% said that Trump did better than expected.

Oh God! Natural light!
To be fair, Trump did do better than expected... in that he neither called Clinton a derogatory term nor did he try to punch her. That's how low opinion of him has gotten.

Wizard Needs Food BadlyIt's such a low bar that "better than expected" is really easy to achieve. It's like handicapping a match between a kindergartener and a pro sports player.

Don't you mean a debate between a kindergartner and a professional politician or is that a little too on the nose for a comparison?
I kid! I kid! A kindergartner would be more well-behaved than Donald Trump.

Wizard Needs Food BadlyAs a European with no self-control whatsoever, I stayed up to watch this. (Yeah, I'm not sleeping tonight - it's basically morning already.)
Neither candidate did poorly. Trump was mostly focused on delivering zingers, some of which were fairly potent, while rapidly changing the subject whenever something negative about him came up.
Clinton was very much about staying calm and keeping cool. She was on the defensive a lot of the time, but did a good job with the challenges posed her by the questions and Trump. Her own attacks on Trump were very spot-on, especially with the fact-checking stuff. She also really wanted to have a go at Russia, without spending a lot of time connecting Trump to Putin. I think she was trying to convey that everyone already knows about that connection, which Trump of course denies.
The moderators seemed a bit harsh on Trump, insisting that he reply to a question sometimes when he deflected and reminding him of the time limit on answers. They also told Clinton to stop talking a couple of times, but neither candidate obeyed. Trump complained about the moderators for allegedly going easy on Clinton, but to be fair Trump was misbehaving more, especially with interruptions. Trump also got more follow-up questions, and thus more time, so it was a bit petty of him to complain that the moderators allowed Clinton to go on on some answers.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.

On CNN: apparently a lot of women didn't like all the pacing that Trump did - they thought it was creepy. I do think he did seem to be sort of looming over her sometimes. He just couldn't sit still.
